Display problem!

I have a slightly strange problem with my 996TT. Usually when one locks the car with the remote key the clock display, digital speedometer and onboard computer information all switches off. However I noticed a few weeks ago that it appeared to be staying illuminated - I didn't think much of this as I was using the car regularly and didn't notice any problems. However when I left the car parked (and locked for over a week) and returned to it last night, the displays were still illuminated, but the battery was completely dead. Has anyone ever experienced this issue before or have any idea what it might be caused by? Is it because the battery is getting towards the end of it's life, or could it be a problem with a illumination delay relay or something? I've located the fuse that powers these items so in the short term I can remove it to prevent the battery going flat when the car's locked but it's not an ideal solution.

When you remove the key is the radio powering off and can you hear the barrel pop out when you remove the ignition key...?

are the door marker lights going out if you look through the window when you press the remote ?

Yep all those things happening correctly - it's just the dash display doesn't always disappear! I have had it suggested that I should check the ignition switch. Part of the problem is that it appears to be intermittent which will make it even harder to trace - thanks for the reply!
