Has anyone managed to use their no-claims discount on two cars? I currently have a Griff insured through Privilige - full noclaims. I want to buy a runaround to use as my main mode of transport but everyone I have phoned say I can only use my noclaims bonus once. As a result I am getting quotes for £2500 to insure a crappy old BMW 7 series TPFT (worth approx £2000)... Cheers, Graham PS. I haven''t bought the BM yet, just thinking about it to give my Griff a bit of a rest over winter. Edited by Graham B on Wednesday 5th September 17:32

Tried it many times over the years, no such facility. The argument that you can only drive one car at a time is too logical for the insurers.

Some years ago my father managed to get two MGB's insured on the same policy with Lancaster, the MG owners club insurer. I am sure it was not an "any car" policy, but he had to keep to "insured only" to drive and keep the car not being used in a garage or lock-up. This would not be hard for many two-car owners. As I said this was a while ago, and I don't know the full details. I insure my Min as my main car and the MG on a second policy with limited mileage. As such the limited mileage policy does not build NCB, which is a bit of a bugger. If anyone finds a two car policy I would be interested. Phil.

I have done this for the last couple of years. My main policy with the NCD is on my "normal" car and my policy for the TVR "mirrors" the NCD on my other policy. I had never heard of this approach before I tried to get the TVR insured. When I ring round, some brokers/agents tell me that this is effectively and "introductory" discount - hey but who cares what they call it as long the price is right. I have used Cheam Ins brokers for the last 2 yrs, but did get very similar offers by shopping around. Needless to say, some companies hadn't heared of Mirroring and threw a wobbly when I suggested it, but there were plenty on places prepared to offer it. The reason I went through Cheam (apart from a reasonable service) is that they were also able to protect my NCD on the mirrored policy for the TVR. This is not something that I could get from any other company that I tried. Although track days were not included in this policy, it does allow me to add on track days on an individual basis for a discounted rate (£35 or so I think, per track day). Let me know if you want any more info. Phil

Another thought on this line . Someone told me of a friend that has a policy (costs them about £1600 I think) that covers his normal car, his porker and his wifes car (possibly even the house insurance as well). In fact it covers him to drive absolutely any car that HE OWNS with any modifications to it, as long as he informs the insurance company prior to driving it. I will try to find out more about this policy and post any details here. Sounds interesting doesn't it.

It could actually be some form of "traders" policy used by very small dealers that just buy and sell cars through exchange & mart etc I had heard of a similar one with a restriction placed on the upper end value of the car (about £35K i think) that one was around the 2 grand mark.

I had my TVR and Audi A8 one one policy through A Mannings, unfortunately it was with Independant. Mannings have transferred my TVR policy to Cornhill and are arranging a second policy to cover the Audi, and the no claims does not seem to be a problem for them, I am getting full no claims discount on both policies.

Thanks everyone, I will give Cheam a call and see what they say. I'd be interested to hear about the other policy Philr! It's unnecessarily frustrating this insurance business. Norwich Union told me they wouldn't give me a quote unless I could supply them with a registration number. Obviously as I am doing the sensible thing and checking the insurance before I buy a car I couldn't supply this. They then refused to quote... Graham

The key thing is really what you end up paying over all for you cars to be insured. It may be that you need to (like me) insure your non-TVR and then mirror the NCD to your TVR. I was getting stupid quotes of £1500 + for my old Renault 19 16v if I moved my NCD to the TVR and then say £900 for the TVR with the NCD. Where as with the NCD on the Renault I was paying £300 and still only paying £900 for the TVR with the mirrored NCD. You just need to be prepared to switch things around different ways to get the best overall price.

Try Norwich Union Direct. They quoted a great price for my Chim with full NCD and gave me an introductory NCD of 50% for my XJ6. Total cost just under £1K. Directline prices were similar. All other quotes were £2K+. For comparison I'm 34, no claims or convictions (yet) and have a nice Surrey postcode.

I currently have my Honda CRX (my everyday car) insured with Royal&Sun Alliance for £300 with protected NCD. My 1988 Porsche 911 is insured with Performance Marques Insurance , who have "mirrored" my protected NCD to a 2nd car policy also with Royal&Sun Alliance for £700 with unlimited mileage. If I had opted to limit the mileage to 5000 p.a the figure would have dropped to &500. Not bad I thought...

As requested by Grahm B, I have finally managed to get in touch with this guy who has the fancy insurance policy that seems to cover all his cars + house + ....

His response to my equiry is below - note that I am not recommending the company concerned, just passing on info, so make your own minds up.
-------------------------------------
The Portfolio insurance policy from Prestige has saved me some serious cash.
Its an unusual policy because it does not restrict you in any way shape or
form regarding the number or type of cars you have so long as none are worth
more than £40K. Adding additional cars, even modified or LHD does not cost
a bean. The restriction is that you must incorporate your house insurance,
travel, boat(?) and motor insurance and to make it cost-effective you really
need 3 or more cars.

The person to speak to is Paul Scott on 07990780453.
--------------------------------------

It sounded like each policy is a bespoke setup directly relating to you and your personal circumstances rather than a generic policy that all the other companies sell.

Hope this helps. If you do get in touch with them then let us know how you get on.

Phil
