Mike,
I believe both the AA and RAC do online vehicle checks. You could also use hpi themselves @ www.hpicheck.com

Be aware though, it will only tell you if there is outstanding debt on the vehicle , not if it is stolen. A collegue of mine bought a pickup and had an HPI check which came back as all clear, unfortunately the truck was a clone, so the HPI check showed, quite correctly, that there was nothing owed on the truck, which there wasn't. All the HPI company would re-imburse him was the money he paid for the HPI check. He lost his trade-in car, the truck he bought and of course the money he paid for the truck.

I know a lot of people put a lot of store in HPI's without realising exactly what purpose they serve.

So you purchasing a replacement for the S then?

Thanks Paul The AA actually offer insurance in case the info they give is wrong, to the price of the car, so am going with them.

Replace the S are you mad...... No replacing the A8 with a Touareg, Ill be burried in the V8S! Are you going to SCH4? Im going to missit which is a f***ing pain but hey with Andy probably not going either it gives someone else a chance to win the V8S trophy as we have come 1st and 2nd the past two years!!! Enjoy!
