S3 door speakers

Hi all,
I want to change the truly shocking factory fit Kenwood door speakers in my S3. I know that the exhaust note should be sufficient and I should forget the speakers but there will be times the Mrs. is in the car and she'll want some musak on.....
Any recommendations? What deiameter and mounting depth should I be looking for?

I put in a set of Kenwood speakers, fantastically called the 'S' series. Can remember the model number off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure they are 13cm 2-way 120W output.

I was sold initially by the fact that they were the shallowest speakers I could find at the size I was after. If in doubt, take one of the originals out and take it with you to the store.
Mounting them was easy - only had to make new holes for one screw on each side. The cables that come with the speakers are standard so unless you have a problem with the current wiring, best leave it in. I'll try and find a picture when I get home of how they look and post it up.

To be honest I think I will add rear speakers quite soon. The door speakers are a hugh improvement as I can turn the volume up loud enough to hear the music without distortion but its still a little muffled coming from the footwell. 6x9s in rear I think.

It's a massive improvement. I think my originals were particularly knackered as anything above about 1/6th volume on the head unit and they crackled and farted like mad. Now it sounds like a decent car stereo. The door cards are fairly thin though which means if you turn it up high, you have to moderate the bass a bit to avoid vibration. I think the door cavities have an affect on the sound too but I;m no acoustic engineer so I can't really describe why!
With the roof on (not a regular occurrence!) its easy to hear at motorway speeds set at fairly low volumes and holds its own with the roof off to about 50mph when you may as well switch it off and concentrate on the exhaust and induction instead.
Not sure about Ralph but I also changed the head unit too. Just to keep up the theme I have a single CD/MP3 50Wx4 Kenwood system which happened to be on offer at the time I bought the speakers. Its a KDC-W4031 if you're interested.

The ones I put in had a mounting depth of 45mm but you could probably get away with a little bit deeper if you need to. I didn't measure the space as I had the luxury of being able to compare to the old ones, though I guess the other half might notice a socking great hole in the door card if you try and borrow one!! I reckon if you keep the mounting depth under 50 - 55mm you should be OK. Keep the receipt just in case though!
