Fuel in France
Discussion
We always use the 98. It's everywhere so you shouldn't have an issue. The only top tip I can give you is to try and fill up just before 5pm everyday as this saves you hunting around for a garage that has a kiosk open. Chip and pin can be more like hit and miss. Have a great time on the French roads, it's what TVR's were built for.

Hi Sean
I usually just use the 95 as it is the same as UK 95 that is recomended by TVR. If you want a little extra performance or your going on a track day you can use the 98 or super. However if you venture into Germany do not use the Benzin fuel as it is crap and i wouldn't put it in my lawnmower. If i had one (i don't do gardening, there's only one thing to do on a sunny day!)

Don't get low on petrol on a Sunday out in the countryside. The only garages open are self service and do not accept UK credit or debit cards.
Trust me - I know to my acute embarrasment
So very true. A top tip. Not just the countryside though. Most of the supermarket petrol stations seem to be unmanned in the evening and only accept chip and pin. I know the UK has only recently switched to this style so I'd be interested in others' experiences. Do UK Chip and Pin debit and credit cards work OK in France ?
We were in France at the beginning of May. Chip and pin works inside the petrol station but the automated pumps still don't accept UK cards. In my original post I said to fill up before 5pm everyday, especially Saturday. It's a good idea to have a load of euros with you as you can always ask a French person to pay on their card and then you hand over the cash. Job done!
go for the highest octane you can sean.
sans plomb = unleaded.
chip and pin works everywhere/ or should!!!
the autopumps don't recognise UK Banks Mastercard (in general) and they don't like Visa AT ALL!!!(same at Spa)

Just returned from France - plenty of 98 around there. I tended to go for Total or Shell - the latter's 98 is 'V-Power'. The 98 pumps are very clearly marked.
I also used the Visacard on an automatic pump near Caen - however, it only works if you haven't removed the handle from the pump first (as I discovered after a couple of attempts!).

Agree with the comments on Sunday opening and UK cards in automatic machines: We have found 'country' filling stations that don't have 98 ron (always use this in the griff as instructed in the hand book) As we hoon to Le Mans on the back roads I usually take a couple of bottles of Millers Octane plus with me, boosts 95 ron to 98 - one 250 ml bottle per 50 litres: about £4 per bottle:

Mike - does this damage the engine in any way as this appears a very good compromise when stuck in areas without 97+ RON fuel (parts of Scotland, France etc)?
