We had a j-reg import 2.2 vtec prelude for 3 years. Practically nothing went wrong with it in 50k miles. The only things we needed to change were the exhaust (had it made by maniflow), front brake discs (they warped for me several times but didn't do it for my wife when she had the car for the last year), the clutch (200 quid at mr clutch) and the rad (recored). None of these things were heart stoppingly expensive although I got a bit p*ssed off changing discs. I've not heard this to be a common problem so perhaps it was just me or my car. They do use oil between services if you use the vtec a lot. My wife would use none but I had to top up between services... check the level regularly. Tyre choice is important as if you get the wrong tyres it understeers like buggery and ruins the fun. Having said that I can't remember what we used but get something sticky. Honda seemed perfectly happy to service it at the main dealers and get bits for me if needed. The cambelts on the import vtecs are different to the uk spec cars as an example and they got some in for me within a couple of days.
Whatever you do don't get an auto as you'll need the flexibility of the manual gearbox to keep it in the vtec zone. The vtec zone is bigger on imports I believe and changing up at the red line means you are still in the zone when the next gear goes in.
I'm not sure why you're having problems insuring it as it was one of the easiest cars we insured. Try Adrian Flux.
