964 - why did I do it?!
Discussion
Well I sold the Clio V6 and bought a 964 as I wanted to get back to 911 ownership.
Didn't want to spend too much so thought I'd be safe with 1992 LHD 964 C2. The car looked great - full OPC history until 2001, new clutch, all service invoices from new, 2 owners, 60k miles and drove really well. There were no major oil leaks evident and no odd noises from the engine.
Anyway I dropped it into a specialist to check over as it needed a few minor things doing. He did some checks and confirmed it was a good example.
However, when he changed the oil the oil pressure warning light came on. He tried changing the oil (different grade) but noticed some metal particles were present in the old oil. Seems the oil pressure relief valve had become stuck and something has been dislodged in the engine. Looks like complete strip down needed and can't see me getting any change from £3k!!
What a mistake

You cant really blame the car its just bad luck mate, your 2 best options are:
1: get engine totally rebuilt to your spec bearing in mind at that stage its not going to cost much more to tune it, and keep it for a long time and enjoy it.
2: get a good second hand lump and fit it, then sell yours, this would be the cheapest option, good 964 lumps start at £2000, and you would get circa £500 for your old engine.

thanks for the votes of sympathy
think I will just bite the bullet and get a rebuild and keep the car - I love 911's after all
I just seem to be cursed with cars:
- bought a Merc 500SL from main dealer. Had it delivered and then went to drive it and wouldn't start. RAC called out and they couldn't start it. Had to go back to workshop for 2 weeks to get fixed.
- bought Ferrari 355 from main dealer. On way down to Le Mans one bank of cylinders shut down. Was intermittent fault and dealer couldn't pick it up. Proved to be complete nightmare

Hi Craig - First up you probably did all you could do to avoid buying a lemon ...its not your mistake , you are just unlucky as someone else said!
Second up - not sure about the diagnosis either . Has the engine been started up with the new oil. If the engine runs and the oil light does not now come on and indicated oil pressure is OK , and no nasty noises can be heard then I'd take it somewhere else for a second opinion before committing to a strip down/rebuild.
I had a 964 case in point where the specialist drained the gearbox oil in my presence , found a steel pin collected on the mag plug , conversation then moved on to what it was doing there and where had it come out from. Box had been working fine prior to draining oil apart from being a bit stiff (!) so decided to ignore it... The option was a gearbox rebuild at similar cost to an engine rebuild.

You could have bought RHD for that extra money !
He probably didn't want to pay a premium for an inferior car?
Less leg room being the big one for me! not to mention bonnet release etc all being on the drivers side in a LHD.
but yes do get a second opinion, would be sickening if it turned out to be a faulty Oil pressure switch for example.
