Don't think anything has really changed. Take a look at Vienna train station and you can still see the imprint of where the eagle of the third reich used to be.

I worked in Vienna for quite a while and travelled through most of the country. Beautiful country and very nice people. Now I go every summer and winter. So, they have some national pride and take their borders seriously? Shame the UK doesn't do the same. How many 100's of 1000's illegals are there in the UK? Or is it millions now?
The UK has become like a huge version of Heathrow airport, a staging area for all sorts of low lives. I know which I prefer and I did vote with my feet

As a german, let me throw in a short note as well:
It may all have a very different reason. During the last years, Austria has become a place for lots of, hmm, how should I put it, "taxwise forgotten money" (?), to find a safe haven. So, the border guys MAY try to spot persons capable enough (judged by their cars) to take along some "extra cash" for the visit. Think, You got the point.
