Call me crazy!!! 996 advice needed.

Have driven a couple of 996s in my quest for dream car.

I've spotted a sweet little Targa and agreed a target price with the vendor. I have inspected the car and docs. but not driven it as yet. Vehicle has full OPC history and is under warranty until August 2006. The vehicle had a 48000 mile service in October 2005 and has only 1500 miles on it since.

I have considered getting a pre-purchase inspection but decided that unless advised otherwise, I am just going to count on the peace of mind of a warranty which is in place and renew it with OPC in July.

I plan to test drive the car ahead of purchase but this is just a formallity. I don't really have a clue what I am looking for - other than - it feels good, no pulling, brakes in a straight line, no leaks etc...

So, am I crazy to do commit over £30k on a car (lot of money for me, currently in an Integra Type R worth £6k) without the checks and just count on the OPC warranty and the fact it has hardly been driven since last major service. What would / have you guys do?

Then one I went for had an OPC warranty and really stood as being the best I'd seen. I needed to move fast to get the price, and didn't have it inspected.

Big mistake, cost me a fg fortune, and spent two weeks off the road.

Go with your gut as long but check the paperwork!

I'd go with it as you can renew an OPC warranty - the big risks are RMS and engine failure both of which are covered under the warranty - most other problems would just be wear and tear. Checks are useful for negotiating a few pounds off.

My service at Parr cost £1279, a month after buying it. I then took it to an OPC to have anything covered by the warranty done (about £800 worth of work).

Only a professional would have picked up the stuff that needed doing, as it wasn't otherwise visible.

Price is likely to already be at rock bottom so inspection would not help there. Would purely be for peace of mind - should I spend £250 odd to save 0ver £30k on a dodgy motor!?!?

Or, is it not gonna be dodgy because it has been Porsche all the way!?!?

Anyone used Peter Morgan - sounds good and have spoken to him.... Guess he's kind of like the Dad - who just comes along to make sure and offer sagely wisdom.

Get it inspected! What is £200 against major outlay later. The warranty is not bulletproof either!

Too many things that can be wrong that cannot be picked up by the layman.

Hi PT1000. I'm in the same situ as you. Have 30k burning a hole in my pocket for my first Porsche. Seen a great one with OPC warranty. For 1% of the value of the car I will be getting an inspection and using Mr.Morgan. Piece of mind is well worth the inspection cost. I'd kick myself if I didn't get it inspected and then it all went horrible wrong........and my wife would string me up!

Peace of mind is priceless, if the car is ligit the owner won't mind.

It could pay for itself..................also call the dealer who did the last service and ask their opinion of the car.

My Peter Morgan inspection paid for itself twice over, but would have been good value even if it hadn't.

I was set for paying the asking price, sent PM in to inspect, and based on his inspection, which picked up a couple of minor things, the vendor agreed to knock £500 off.

Alex Creasy seems good. I have a private car to look at Saturday which I'd get the insepction on. With Alex I don't believe you always get the chance tohave an insepction as he will buy via auctions. However I will give him a go if the car on sat doesn't check out.
where are you based?
