Exhaust clamp blues....
Discussion
Occassionally I scrape the ground with my exhaust clamps which sit just in front of the sump...in fact, I'm on my fourth clamp since first getting the car. I always thought, well never mind, I'll just get a Kwikfit monkey to pop a new one on as i bend 'em....
Der...! this is not a good idea 'cos I've got a great dent in my sump where these clamps keep getting knocked along the pipe...
So...I'm thinking of getting the pipe welded up and doing away with the clamp.
My S has been decatted and so there is another clamp further up by the engine which picks up the exhaust from the manifold...
this sorta' makes the lower clamp a bit superfluous...
Has anybody done this already.....Paul.
PS Please no small mammal remedies Tvrgit....

There is a different type of clamp you can fit which doesnt have the protruding sections the standard ones have. I got the info from this site, but I did a quick search and can't find the thread. Maybe someone else can point you in the right direction. They work alright, the exhaust bottoms a lot less than it used to
you can teach a guinea pig to weld it from the inside - gives a much better seal.
or you can use Mikalor SupraPro clamps which give more ground clearance than ordinary U-bolts, available from Demon Tweeks here:

the 51-55mm ones seem about right for mine

If I start using guinea pig labour the animal rights protesters might dig up my old Grandad and hide is mortal remains in your TVR at SCH4....this might invite comments from onlookers such as...how well tvrgit is looking this year...still got the TVR grin I see...
Many thanks for the link mate...I'll order a couple of those beauties today....Paul
I have a couple of those and they are good...don't overtighten them though.
Frankly, if you are that low to clout the existing U clamps that frequently, you have spring sag don't you?
Mine hit everything until I replaced the springs and shocks, now I am OK except for the worst speedhumps, but only landrovers get over them!

Might be worth checking the engine mountings, I have replaced the engine mounts, now the engine and exhaust sit approx. an inch higher?
Yes....that is a good idea, I will do just that...my new clamps will arrive tomorrow so I'll check the mounts whilst I'm under it...
Cheers chaps...
Paul.
PS Just recently fitted new Gaz shocks and springs.. don't believe I'm sagging...leastways not in the spring department.

I have seen S types at various heights, from the "tyre up inside wheelarch and belly scraping on ground" look to the "look i'm a 4x4" ground clearance. OK I'm exaggerating but scraping the exhaust is not necessarily a sign of weak / saggy springs - owners seem to set their own ride height preferences.
Mine had a broken spring originally - I replaced the fronts with adjustables, still set fairly low, but the clearance is much better - still nowhere near enough to get over the larger speed bumps though. In setting the height, I was guided by a voice inside me that said I needed to get the bottom wishbone as near as I could, to horizontal - I forget where I learned this in the mists of time (I'm very old) but it's something to do with camber angles on cornering, and reducing bump steer I think. Anyway that's what I did and it seems to handle rather well.
