Hi there folks - this afternoon, completely forgetting most of the cup final (doh) found myself with a couple of hours to spare so set off to my local scrap yards to do some scrounging - on the wants list were previously easy items to obtain such as a smiths temp guage - in days of old found in mini's, most triumphs, MG's, Jags etc etc. I hadn't been to local yards for a few months - back then there was a plethora of all things A series, now however things are a little different - no British classics other than an, half a TR7, an SD1, Austin 1300 & Moggie Convertable - all throroughly plundered / knackered - only one a series metro (engineless)and only one - yes one mini!with absolutely nothing of any use left - looks like the last hurrah for cheapo parts, in conversation it would appear that yards with new regs on recycling and recovering steel prices have taken the opportunity to clear out all the non profitable but heavy classics - going to have to go to some seriously rural yards !!
What was even more surprising is that some seriously good cars had been scrapped e.g VW Bora & 2001 Vectra - all with not a lot apparently wrong with them before being stacked up - has the throwaway society gone a bit far?????????? (the bora with no airbags deployed only appeared to need new front bumper, light , wing, front door & some cosmetics to rear door - it even started - doddle, well it would have been bar the saab sat on top of it)- all the more galling as I was driving our still perfectly good 93 Vento older than about 80% of scrappie stock!
But serious point here it looks like without my really appreciating it - the mini and all of its potential donors are now endangered species.....................

(Then got back for the last 10 mins of normal time 100% behind the hammers- aaaargh blasted scousers!!!! remembered at that point tha I'm really the (singular) Oxford United fan - oh well the cricket's dull & boring but going the right way.... off to the garage............
