Why should the sound of a car make a difference?

If you ask most TVR owners why they bought one, invariably nine times out of ten the word "sound" gets used fairly early on in the conversation - myself included.

I was thinking about this, it's strange. What other product would you spend tens of thousands of Pounds on (partially) because of the noise it made? Also, why do humans like the sound of a throbbing, burbling, engine? It gets my pulse going just listening.

Maybe it takes us back to the womb and the sound of our mother's heartbeat!

Or could it be for the same reason that young boys (and girls) like beating a drum - it's a great release to be noisy - proves we're alive!

Noise maybe one thing but drive one thats where the love affair begins
had chim 4.5 and miss it got Tuscan RR and can never believe how fast it is

It's all about P O W E R! And a big noise generally means power.
I spent ££££s on a Mackie 6500 watt P.A Rig. It sounds Fantastic and it's stereo and it's powerful, as does my Tama Double Kick Drum Kit, very loud! A? Pardon?
To hear the twin exhausts from a V8 between 2 walls is also going to be in stereo. So the sound is both stereo (as a Rule) and powerful, Can't beat it! And that's why Petrol Heads the world over love the sound of a powerful engine.

Before my jump into TVR ownership I was going to buy a big yank cruiser. Looked at a few. TVR wasnt really on the radar. Then one day I got stuck in traffic for the Blackwall Tunnel and sat next to a red 400SE for 15 minutes untill he switched it off. I than spent another 15 minutes studying the car.

Traffic cleared, he started it up and gave it some welly.

I bought my first TVR, a white 350i, 10 days later

You have got 6.5kW of sound just to annoy the neighbours with your kick drum?? You must be fun to have next door!! :-))

Once at Uni, I got fed up with my next door neighbour in the hall of residence (playing music too loud - the loudness was ok but his taste in music was appalling). It was easily solved with my Marshall valve 100w top on full driving my Marshall 4x12! I was just practising my bass licks honest (shame I didn't have both 4x12 cabs and amps with me)! I got a bit of a talking too though by the authorities!

It's a good question - it's something to do with exhilaration and adrenaline. The noise my S2 makes when accelerating, changing down, or if you're standing behid it on tickover gives me the same buzz as hearing a BRMV16 on full noise all the way round the Silverstone GP circuit (hearing it go up and down the gears with the blip of the throttle on the downchange, a 50s Ferrari v12 with 6 Webers accelerating hard, a Spitfire doing a low pass (not a Triumph going up the inside - a Supermarine going over the top!!) or a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo. I just love the noise - the louder the better IMO
