there are some good routes up from the borders, try Selkirk to Moffatt, then take M74 to Glasgow. A82 to Crianlarich and on up North via Glencoe or similar.
try looking for Get Carter's route advice, it is on here somewhere.

There is a thread on this lower down. So far as I could see there is only one even vaguely direct way there!

I did it for Easter - M6-M74-M8 to Glasgow. Then once on the M8 head towards Dumbarton. You're looking for A82 towards Crianlarich. Follow this to Tarbet and then take the A83 towards Campbelltown. This wiggles over mountains and along lochs and is generally very pretty. At Tarbert (as opposed to Tarbet!) follow the ferry signs and thereafter keep eyes skinned for Kennacraig. It's easy to drive past as is simply a small ferry terminal - there is no village!

Takes between 2 and 3 hours from Glasgow. I thoroughly enjoyed the drive but you need a decently powered car otherwise it's easy to get stuck behind trucks and dawdling grockels as the road is so twisty.

Yup, would agree with Racingteatray above and I'm a local (Tarbert). When are you travelling? I'll keep an eye out for you?

Look out for either a Silver 993 C2S or a Black 996 C4 Cab.
Most probably the Cab seeing as the 993 is for sale!

One bad thing about driving in Scotland, it will spoil you when you have to go back south of the border.

Enjoy your trip to Gods country, fine malts, good hospitality, stunning scenary, and clear roads, enjoy.

Well I now live in California so a trip to God's country is exactly what I need!!

Can anyone tell me if there are clearance issues with getting on/off the ferry at Kennacraig??
(standard height 996 or RS height 993!!!)

thx

^^^ You should be OK I think but I'm no expert. It's not one of those slips where you drive down it and then onto the ramp of the ferry. It's the type that doesn't have a slipway and the ramp of the ferry just sits on the road so it meets pretty much horizontally. Not a very clear description, I know, but it's the best I could muster up

Does it not depend on the tide? A lot of the time it is just level but I do recall on one occasion I've had to take it quite carefully because it wasn't level despite the fact that the ground clearance on my car is actually surprisingly good.

Far better than a cross channel ferry though.

Should be OK - looks like I'll be taking the 996; ground clearance marginally less than a Cayenne!!

On your climb up the A83 4 miles beyond Arrochar-where the McFarlans come from- look down to your left and you will see the old hillclimb track(Rest and Be Thankful" which is a very important piece of Scottish motor history.

Finding Kennacraig was no problem at all - cheers for the help chaps.
Finding enough places to put the whisky I bought however....!

How was Islay? Is it worth the trip?

Which distilleries did you visit? I'm a "Friend of Laphroiag" and have often thought of driving to Islay.

Hi, my first post here, but i've been reading for a while. I'm really keen to go up to the Highlands in a few weeks to do a bit of driving/camping. Just wondered if anyone could tell me if the roads are as quiet as they look like they should be. The only reason I ask is that i'll be taking a standard 1.7 Puma, so overtaking might be a bit of an issue unless there's a lot of room.

Cheers guys.
