Road to Islay??
Discussion
There is a thread on this lower down. So far as I could see there is only one even vaguely direct way there!
I did it for Easter - M6-M74-M8 to Glasgow. Then once on the M8 head towards Dumbarton. You're looking for A82 towards Crianlarich. Follow this to Tarbet and then take the A83 towards Campbelltown. This wiggles over mountains and along lochs and is generally very pretty. At Tarbert (as opposed to Tarbet!) follow the ferry signs and thereafter keep eyes skinned for Kennacraig. It's easy to drive past as is simply a small ferry terminal - there is no village!
Takes between 2 and 3 hours from Glasgow. I thoroughly enjoyed the drive but you need a decently powered car otherwise it's easy to get stuck behind trucks and dawdling grockels as the road is so twisty.

^^^ You should be OK I think but I'm no expert. It's not one of those slips where you drive down it and then onto the ramp of the ferry. It's the type that doesn't have a slipway and the ramp of the ferry just sits on the road so it meets pretty much horizontally. Not a very clear description, I know, but it's the best I could muster up

Does it not depend on the tide? A lot of the time it is just level but I do recall on one occasion I've had to take it quite carefully because it wasn't level despite the fact that the ground clearance on my car is actually surprisingly good.
Far better than a cross channel ferry though.

Hi, my first post here, but i've been reading for a while. I'm really keen to go up to the Highlands in a few weeks to do a bit of driving/camping. Just wondered if anyone could tell me if the roads are as quiet as they look like they should be. The only reason I ask is that i'll be taking a standard 1.7 Puma, so overtaking might be a bit of an issue unless there's a lot of room.
Cheers guys.
