air con and idle

If you have air con and switch it on at idle, does it not stall the engine? Mine always has done.
I believe there is a solenoid you can buy which bolts onto the carb which raises the rpm slightly to compensate.
The other way is to increase idle mixture.
How have you got around it and what's the best solution?
forgot to add: I have booked my car in to be tuned tomorrow. Not happy with the way it's running yet!

Hi,
I fitted a solenoid twice (bolted on to the carb). Both lasted only several hundred miles, then got stuck. I suppose the Ultima engines simply get too hot under the bonnet. So this is a waste of money. (and I nearly crashed the car when once it got stuck and kept idle at 3.000 rpm which I was not expecting when I approached a crossing...)
Here is what I have done: optimise the carb idle mixtures and increase idle to approx. 1.200 rpm. When the air-con switches on it drops to around 850 rpm, but does not stall. There is only one problem left, that is when at the same time the front fans cut in (the alternator load reduces the idle speed by another 50 to 100 rpm) and when you break hard. But with my Holley race carb the stalling under breaking has much improved as well (did not happen to me for nearly one year...).
