Hole in rocker cover....

My alternator has been rubbing on my rocker box cover and worn a hole in it...It's now got a liberal coating of oil...
The hole is only tiny....anybody had this problem before and if so how did you fix it....

Well you could stick a metal patch on over the hole.

You could braze a patch on to get something more permanent.

You could plug the hole if it's small enough with gasket sealer or silicone. I wouldn't, but you could.

You could go to a scrappy and get a rocker cover off a Ford, and then paint them both to match if you like.

You could employ a small mammal to hold its paw over the hole while the engine is running (short tailed mammals are best because it reduces the chance of them getting caught in the fanbelt and other whirry bits)

You could empty all of the oil out of your engine so that none leaks out of the hole any more.

I depends on the finish you want.

How come your alternator is that close to the rocker cover? I am going to have a look at mine tomorrow, my tiv is an S2 so I don`t think there is any difference in the alternator set up. I know there is a spacer on the alternator pivot bolt, maybe this is on there to give clearance and of course correct alignment of the belt, if your belt is to short you won`t be able to pivot the alternator far enough to get the desired clearance, or maybe I`m talking bo^&*cks here.

I personaly would replace the cover rather than contract a small furry to cover the hole, it'll be cheaper in the long run what with the minimum wage for mammals.

Now I discounted the small mammal option as soon as I read it...a small animal, say a hamster for instance will not stay perched on the rocker box cover with it's paw over the hole...as soon as the bonnet is closed it would fuk off and gnaw the wiring or something...do away with the oil option is just daft..wot no more pretty patterns on the garage floor....I like the silicon rubber option but ultimately I think, it will be the brazing option...

The fan belt length does need investigating...it shouldn't really happen....

I think you are all missing a great oppertunity here. Sling a lit match in the petrol tank and claim on the insurance saying it was the oil from the rocker cover. Buy a new TVR and then check that the blinking thing works properly in the first place. Hang on I see flaw in that plan............a TVR working properly, nah.
