1/4 mile - seem so short

Just looking at this - www.pistonheads.tv/clip814
When you see how short the 1/4 mile is you just think (or I do - what is the point going all that way for such a short blast!?)
Do that away from the light any day of the week...........

Not racing is it (well yes I admit it is...) but by racing I mean stop start, brake, accelerate, brake, stick it up the inside, racing.
No it's not but I don't think anyone said it was.
But I do know it was fun.
Not knocking it as such - I can see the point for REAL big power car - designed for it - but the short distance does not seem to lend itself to lower powered cars (even TVR's) and woul be so much more fun over 1/2 mile (although not for the 8000bhp top fuelers - don't get me wrong). More the famous TG Vid Sprint which was either 1/2 or a ful mile - REALLY GET SOME SERIOUS SPEED UP...
Trust me, it isn't as easy as you'd think! The thrill when you do nail the takeoff just right, hit every gear change spot on and post a quick time is immense. I used to do it on bikes (GSXR750), and traction issues take on another dimension. On one of my runs the back end stepped out as the front end lifted, and I took off all crossed up and heading for the armco. I managed to avoid the barrier without having to back off, and I felt like a God after that run!

I don't think speed is the point, and 1/2 mile would be boring - after the launch its more or less a matter of just changing gears at the right time. After second gear you're more or less a passenger. The thrill, and skill, is all in getting maximum grip and acceleration away from the start. After 1/4 mile its more about the car than the driver - IMHO of course.

Have you ever tried it?
From personal experience i have raced a bike and a few cars up the strip including a Metro (turbo) and i gotta say it is one major buzz. Last time i did it i thought i was gonna have a heart-attack with all the adrenaline pumping.
With regards to the 1/2 mile thing. With 'normal' powered cars that feeling of big acceleration is tailing off by the 1/4 mile mark.
I've done track days too and there is a different buzz with that but i gotta say i love running cars & bikes up the 1/4 mile.
I dont think you can get the true feeling from a spectator. If you haven't tried it, give it a go. you may be surprised.

Good for you, so can we all - but as far as Im aware we all had a great day - made even better by the cross country hoon to Santa Pod & back.
It was a chance for many of us to try something a little different amongst friends.
Each to their own I suppose & if it doesnt appeal to you then fine - doing donuts outside The Ace Cafe doesnt float my boat but you seem to enjoy it

You know the feeling you have sitting on the grid waiting for the red light to go out? That's sort of what you get at the start on the strip. Getting decent traction is harder than on the road. You always know that you could have done better and you loop around for another go. You then have the decisions on whether you should hold 3rd longer or change to 4th. IT's not quite the same as racing but for the money its damn good value.

Edit. Plus you would get to prove the real benefits of your conversion to all the nay sayers! Of course, if you get your arse whooped you are going to get flack for god knows how long!

It's an example, but doesn't quite hit the nail on head, IMHO.
