Importing and registering in Australia
Discussion
I have the first few stages of an Ultima GTR in the UK but I am working in Australia. I am thinking of shipping it over but I am not sure how expensive this would be and even if I get it here if it could be registered. If anyone has any experience of this please get in touch.
I am based in Melbourne, Victoria.
Thanks
Mark

Mark,
Contact Paul at www.apseng.com.au for the specifics. They are taking care of all my compliance requirements and will be able to tell you with more
authority than I can about the specific regulations that you will need to adhere to.
I have brought most stuff over (other than the LS2) and the costs add up ..............
Freight, Customs, Dock Charges, Our pathetic currency, 10% duty, 10%GST and the list goes on.

Welcome to the forum Markoconnell, Stevesyd and Skyskraper.
you will find lots of good info hear, though i suspect that Stevesyd might have plenty to add as well, nice to see you on the board
Its good to have a few more people from Australia interested in Ultimas, I’m in Melbourne as well, and while I’m not building on at this stage I would like to be able to build one in the future.
I would have to agree with Bob, from a Victorian state point of view the best thing to do would be to contact one of the Vic Roads registered automotive engineers that can asses an “individually Constructed vehicle” try and find one that your happy to work with and get them on side from the start. They may require you to present the vehicle to them for various checks (eg chassis beam test mentioned previously) during the build as well as for the final inspection. I think that the time the engineer first sees the vehicle has a major bearing on what rules the car will have to pass as well. Last time I looked you had a two year period to get the car finished without having to worry about trying to meet changes in rules and legislations that may occur during the build period. Meaning that if you were to first present the car to the engineer in 2006 you would only have to pass 2006 emissions regulations, not 2008 if you get the car finally finished then, who knows what the rules may be then. Either way the first step is to find an engineer that would be happy to take care of the compliance work and have a chat to him. This is basically the stage that I’m up to now and have been considering going for a while, they will probably charge a few bucks to tell you exactly what you can and cant do, would be good to get it in writing so that when they change their mind later you have something to fall back on. Let me know if you choose to go down this route, I might tag along, maybe we could go halves in the costs
If you just want to get an idea about what’s required then you might find some useful info hear
www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb/vsb_ncop.aspx
if you need to get a copy of any of the Australian design rules then a good location to get them from is any one of the university libraries in the capital city’s. I downloaded most of them of the Swinburne University intranet, so now I have an uncontrolled copy

Hi Guys,
I'm near Canberra and have a yellow factory built Ultima Spyder. I think mine was one of the first Ultimas in Aus and it needed to go through much testing to get registered. I have the DOTARS approval file on the car, but it seems to cover the Ultima Sport, Spyder and GTR (no mention of Canam, not just my car even though all the pictures are of my car. I can dig it up if anyone needs it.
I'm trying to build a new house at the moment and I would consider sellng my Spyder (already NSW registered) if anyone really wants to get on the road quickly.
Andy
phone 0410 553 934 if you're interested in buying the Spyder.
p.s. have you seen the latest "Just Cars" magazine with the feature on an Ultima GTR?

Thanks for the posting. The DOTARS information would be most useful if you can find it, thanks.
I'd be keen to get a copy of the DOTARS info also. The Hong Kong Transport Department will recognise other the equivalence of some other countries, Australia being one of them.
Hi Crafty, hows the build going, I’m guessing by the way you started that you must just about be up to registration, from the research that ive done I think the process goes like this
Go to
www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb/vsb_ncop.aspx
down the bottom of the page is a list of different documents and check lists
The check list of rules to be covered for an individually constructed vehicle (what an Ultima would be classed as) is listed as NCOP10A LO1-3 ICV checklist 3 Feb 2006, see link below, should open up a PDF file.
www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb/vsb_ncop_downloads.aspx#10a
in the file it makes reference to different Australian Design Rules (ADR’s) that must be meet, I think the first one is ADR 1/00 reversing lamp signals,
this means that you have to meet the requirements set out in “ADR 1/00” for your reverse lamps to be acceptable, the document goes on to list 14 pages worth of ADR’s to comply with
I think you would be able to get a copy of the ADR’s through www.sai-global.com as they are the managers of all Australian standards. Would likely have to pay for it. Let us know if that’s a help
Failing that you could always try the university libraries they seem to keep these things up to date.

OK, I found the DOTARS file......dated 24 Oct 2002 and 05 May 2003.
There is a full vehicle description and a list of the ADRs that the cars needed to meet.
There is a list of the ADRs that it didn't need to meet but with some restrictions and specifc warning lables that need to be fixed to the car. There is a list of approved engines (incl LS1) and approved wheel sizes (up to 18"
. It also lists minimum height requirements to the wheel arch, which explains why I had to adjust my suspension spring seats up to get it past inspection.
The file numbers are: (Spyder) PV150-RVD1-2 (GTR) PV150-CA01-2
The DOTARS reference number is 13411 on the approval documents.
Someone told me that if you call or email the Transport information contacts on the DOTARS website, they can send you a copy. If not, I have been meaning to buy a scanner anyway........
BTW, I only want about $96K for my Spyder if anyone is interested.

Hi Andy,
I have emailed DOTARS asking for a copy of their docs.
If you could make a copy for me I'd be happy to pay all costs. Bob "LS2ULTIMA" is putting together a GTR with (obviously) an LS2 in Melbourne and I know he'd be stoked to get hold of a copy too.
As you know, with Govt departments if you can point to another example, then there's no risk of them being the first to approve it, and makes it so much easier for them to make a decision.
