Axial Displacement
Discussion
Chaps - anyone know why I'm getting a steering column forward/aft displacement of about 3mm on 360 degrees? I have the UJ's mounted on either end of the diagonal in the same plane - i.e. both 'U' shapes horizontal at the same time.
Before I go to the kaffufal of trying them at 90 degrees out of phase to see if they cancel each other out, has anyone been here before?
Cheers
Pete

Well Steve, as I have gone for a Stig-like steering column stalk type arrangement, I have two sprung contacts that allow operation of the horn centre push.....(well the factory steering wheel (Momo) did have a horn symbol in the centre push - so I might as well use it!). I don't think it will cause a problem as these contacts have max plunge of 5mm - but I would hate to be mid corner and have to HONK and for nothing to come out!
If I can irradicate it great, if it is a characteristic, then, c'est la vie!

Mr Crafty, it's not free play it's geometry in the UJ. If I used washers and split pins, they'd just be working against the column.
'Join the two with the second universal joint making sure that the universal joints line up with each other.'
This taken from build CD. Does line up mean 'U' shapes on either end of the diagonal in the same plane, or at 90 degrees?????

It definitely means the former. At 90 deg displacement the UJ's will not function correctly and the steering will be very "lumpy". I would "suspect" that either your UJ position may be out by one spline on the steering shaft or the steering shaft has not been properly made and the splines do not line up from end to end (they do have to be exactly the same).
My wheel does not move axially when you rotate it.
