360 Stradale and other news

During a short visit to Maranello last week, I spoke with a market manager at the factory and he confirmed the 360 Stradale (something like a road-legal version of the 360 Challenge with more power, less weight and cosmetic changes driven by improved aerodynamics and downforce - described by Luigi and Manu in more detail on PH) will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
He also said quite categorically that, contrary to rumours, there will be no all-new successor to the 360 this year and the eventual successor will not use the 4.2 litre Maserati engine. He didn't deny the possibility the 456 successor could be unveiled this year but doubted the all-new 575 successor would be out even in 2004.

The 360 Challenge Stradale just got announced on the Owners Site (www.owners.ferrari.com) with a photo that shows a modified, more aggressive, lower front and a bigger rear lip like the 575M.
The Challenge Stradale derives from the latest interpretation of the pure Ferrari tradition of making road cars directly derived from the race cars. With the Challenge Stradale the racing expertise comes from the Ferrari Challenge International Championships and the FIA GT races, where the 360 Challenge and 360 GT models are top protagonists, both in Europe and in the United States.
The strong links of the Challenge Stradale road car to racing are underlined by a significant weight reduction, obtained also through a sporty set up and additional aerodynamic contents, enhanced braking performance and F1-style gearbox.
The engine is the 3,586cc V8, with five valves per cylinder and titanium conrods, which secured a worldwide success to the 360 Modena and the 360 Spider. The all aluminium body and chassis are the ones designed and produced by Ferrari for the 360 Modena.
The colour of the car on the Ferrari stand in Geneva will be the new “Rosso Scuderia”, the same red of the Formula 1 cars, with decorations recalling Ferraris used in customer races of the past.

Absolutely right Manu. The intention of this car is UNMISTAKEABLE.
The new front end looks fantastic - subtle, but very very effective!!!
Not so sure about the stripe down the centre though - Just doesn't do it for me - would look better without I think.
Luigi: Your are indeed a very lucky chap. Don't forget, this time we'll want video footage of you whoopin' some F50 ass!!!!!

- in STOCK guise sound is comparable to Tubi!

Sorry guys, I just came back from a 3 day business trip in Boston (-7° Celsius ) so I didn't get to see the Stradale until now.
First of all: I'm not getting it with these stripes, that's for sure...
To me it looks fantastic: it looks so low and mean, with an aggressive but well integrated front spoiler and sideskirts, and a butt that I think will be one of the most beautiful ever.
As I already new, this one is basically a race car, with the possibility to travel on the road and not vice versa: look at the carbonfibre side mirrors, and think that the doors are made of the same material!(like most of the interior...)
The wheels are not the Challenge ones, although similar, they are the original FIA-GT one's, made of magnesium.The tyres are bigger too and are track oriented ones made just for the Stradale...
As far as brakes, you can see that this one in the pic already has the carbon ones.
Suspension is totally new and uncompromising.
To put this car's potential in prespective on e number is sufficient:
2,809 kg/hp !!!!!!!!!
As a comparison the GT2 is:
3,12 kg/hp

A friend of mine went to Fiorano today and got some info on the Challenge Stradale from a Ferrari executive:
The car will indeed weigh under 1200 kgs for sure, I don't know how they managed this but it really is amazing.
The F1 system is extremely quicker than that found in the 360.
The power will be slightly higher than the Modena's(around 420 true hp).
Not sure if the perspex windows will pass all homologation issues, so they aren't 100% sure they'll make it to the production car.
The wheels are magnesium 19 inch items and the tyres are a variation of the Pirelli Pzero Corsa especially made for the CS (225 fr. and 295 back) with more longitudinal grooves.
The back end doesn't only sport the new ducktail, but is subtly reworked in a very aggressive way.
And now hear this:
The Challenge Stradale is the second fastest car to ever lap Fiorano circuit, having just the Enzo quicker.(F50, F40 etc... are all slower)
Price will be around 160-165000 Euros in Europe.
All the other specs are the same as what I've already told you a while ago...

How will the Stradale achieve a weight below 1200kg? Ferrari itself quotes a weight of 1390kg for the Modena and I have found this to be extremely accurate (with a nearly empty gas tank) using a scale. With a stated weight savings of 100kg this would put it midway between the Modena and the stated weight of the Challenge (1170kg), or about 1290kg. I would love for it to come in at under 1200kg but do not see this happening. I will be receiving my car in 10-12 months (USA).

Ferrari quotes 1290 kg for the Modena as dry weight.
The 1380 kg figure you are referring to is the EC weight which includes all the fluids, some luggage, and a 75 kg driver.
The CS will be under 1200 kg dry (or unladen) weight.
I too was skeptical, but this figure has been specifically confirmed by an executive at Maranello.

Luigi and everyone else - I've managed to get a little bit of second hand info - most of the weight loss is achieved by totally Carbon Fibre doors, CF race seats (save a LOT), reduced electrics - everything from less wiring to smaller batteries - it has a half roll-cage apparently (not full) which has stiffened the already mega-stiff chassis further. Harnesses are standard... (in mkts where this is legal). Wheels are NOT the BBS Challenge or the N-GT rims - they're heavier but still VERY light reducing unsprung weight - the brakes MAY BE carbo-ceramic like the Enzo....

My car weighs 1390kg on a very accurate scale without a driver or luggage, with almost no gas, but including all other fluids. I guess my point is that Ferrari tends to be overly optimistic regarding actual car weight. An american car magazine is quoting that the Challenge Stradale will be 500lbs (about 220kg) lighter than the Modena and I am trying to verify that this is not, in fact, true. As for being faster than a GT2, I sincerely hope so. I would like nothing better than to show them my tail at the local track and streets!
