Goldeneye: Can a Tank Oversteer???
Discussion
There was a program on TV recently about the bond gadgets/stunts and apparently that was one of the stunts that was done without special effects. ie. they simply bought an old Russian tank dolled it up to look like a more modern russian tank and then,um, tanked about in it, so to speak.
What you see on the screen was what they really did (with the exception of the bit where he piles through the building)
So there you go, you learn a new thing everyday.

Technically a tank can't oversteer, it can point turn (lock's one track whilst other one moves or both move in opposite direction) - equivalent of donuts.
Or it could slide, but as a tank can only steer by using a greater speed on one track to the other, then no it can't oversteer.

Saw this too Andy - they actually did it

There's been loads of Bond stuff on the TV lately - (cynic mode on) maybe something to do with plugging the latest film, but one thing a special fx bloke on one of the programmes said was all the bond stunts are "really" done, not computer graphics or whatever -fair play to them! -shame they put an american V8 in that Aston in the new ice chase though

Very common trick actually... you'd be surprised at the number of stunt cars that aren't as the production version... it's just that the Bond films tend to get more publicity for this sort of thing.
IIRC most tank engines are in the back, along with the fuel tanks.
Then again, I have no idea about the weight distribution, as the front glacis plate carries one hell of a lot of armour...
If there is more weight at the back than at the front, surely a tank would appear to oversteer when hooning around?

Yep, they actually drove that scene, the nutter stunt driver that did it was on TV before XMAS.
One of my pilot friends reckons that he has under steered a 737 into a parking bay in icey conditions!!!
That effect they did flipping the Aston over in the new film was great - all the axles bucled and it looked like a clown car driving down the road!!!

with all the Bond related programs on recently including the "10 best stunts" I can't believe that the car jump in the man with the golden gun was not featured. The one where he jumps a river when persuing scaramanger (sp?) and does a sort of barrel role, that is my all time top car stunt
