Further problem - my spi donor has an aux electric fan on the outboard side of n/s inner wing whereas my project car has the original ribbed inner wing - planning to run on 5 x 12's so if i spacered the fan out approx 8mm (got some highly suitable aluminium spacers - originally spare from a gas barbie!) I dont think there will be any clearance issues or necessity to slice & dice inner wing - has anyone ever come up with a better solution????? - or more importantly is the aux fan necessary? - I have a minispares 2 core rad to go in and have a dowty aerofan too (ok ok the fan is just because a) I've had it so long it's a traditonal fitment to my cars and b) I like the noise which is a unique howl!)......

Morning Tim-D. Have got a 93 Mini Carb with an 85bhp state of tune and despite running it in very hot ambients have only had the aux fan on the inner wing kick in once (On the way to Spa 35+ degrees C). With the modern 2-core rads the auxiliary fan was fitted by Rover as a safety net!

I wouldnt bother with the aux fan, unless your likely to do lots of motor way drivng on hot bank holidays and end up getting stuck in jams, or track days.

I've always found that with 1275 engines they are quite OK with standard rad until they start to get really hot, then it's so difficult to get them to cool down, even on a long straight road at moderate speed. The only time I use my aux. fan, and it's fully manual in operation, is when I sit stationary on a hot days at tickover and the temp starts to go up. Switch it on to keep temp within normal levels.

Same as Cooperman for me, I have an auxillary fan which is operated from a switch on the dashboard. I use it when it heavy traffic in hot weather whan I know the temp needle will rise. It's much easier to prevent the temperature from getting too hot in the first place than bringing it down from hot to normal again.

Hello Tim, If you dont want the fan, would you be interested in selling it? Am looking to fit one to my '87 Mini which I am taking to Mongolia in a Charity Rally event. I have been looking for one in a while and can't find a decent second-hand one.

Cheers

Ian - nice try 10/10 but engine is going to be moderately tweaked so am going to retain as a safety measure until I'm sure it's not needed - one was on ebay not so long ago and didn't sell for a fiver - may still be there! Are you doing the Mongolia trip in an alleged 100 quid banger? - just saw something like that in the paper yesterday! - if so very brave saw long way round and was horrified at state of roads - or lack of them - will a mini stand up to that if a hilux couldn't????

£100, try £60. I was lucky. Picked it up cheap with only 40,000 miles on the clock and full service history. Was a cat d right-off just needed to replaced the boot hinge panel. A mini complete the rally last year. Check out the website..... www.mongolrally.com or our website www.miniadventure.info

Got my eyes glued to ebay. seen one for a kit car for £20. Cheers for letting me know....

Long Way Round is cool. Gave me a good insight to what I have coming.
