Air Filter....

I took full advantage of the sunshine today, took the top off and went for a nice long country blast. The first decent drive I've had since the new shocks and 12k service...The engine seemed to be up for any amount of stick...sounded great and ran as smooth as a ball bearing in a bucket of snot('scuse the simile)...the new spark plugs seem to make a difference....

Anyways I got home and thought I'd have a little peep under the bonnet. To my consternation there was a red odourless fluid dripping from the foam air filter...I removed it and found nothing within the intake pipes...I wuz perplexed.

I rang the garage that did the service and asked what the hey! is this stuff dripping from the air filter. They said..."hmm..yes that would be the oil that we rejuvenate the filter with...don't worry about it...it will go away..."

Now am I being sold a line here...because these airfilters are foam rubber....oil and rubber, not a good combo...
Would a new filter not be unreasonable on a 12k service...instead of a washed one in the workshop bog...?

Pipercross do sell a cleaner kit for the filter which includes some oil.

The foam filters shold be lightly oiled, it is the oil that traps the dirt. Sounds like the garage used slightly too much. Good to know they did clean it though, it's easy enough to skip.

K&N air filter oil is red.
always just washed filters out myself then thrown them away every two years
otherwise you get a red odourless fluid dripping out of the air filter.........

K&N fluid is indeed red. I tend to spray quite a lot on my filter after cleaning then roll the thing between my hands in a rag to get the excess off. It seems to me that they just sprayed a lot on. AFAIK this will not do the car any harm, but chances are you will have a fair amount of sticky oil deposited in you intake after a long run.
