Hi all,

I'm considering buying an early 3R which has a 5 speed box and no LSD.

Does anyone know if the LSD and 6 speed gearbox are standard Ford items? If so what would it cost to replace them (roughly, parts and labour)?

Thanks

The gearbox is from Getrag and the diff is from Quaife. HTH.

Thanks fellas. If anyone's done this swap recently and knows what's involved please add your reply.

Cheers

I think I asked once. The parts costs were dwarfed by the labour for taking the engine out IIRC (obviously repressing the memory...)

Maybe someone's figured out how to do the swap in situ though?

Thanks for your emails, posts and calls everyone.

I saw 2 today (6 speed and LSD), one of which stood out head and shoulders above the other.

I am 99% sure of my decision.

Cheers

Ford 'box and Quaife diff'.

And yes, the labour charges do dwarf the cost of the components because it's far from being a straightforward transplant.

Glad you've found one already fitted with a six-speeder; the five-speeders are fairy rare...

Yeah it's a cracker too. My only concern is the narrow local roads. You have to constantly mount the pavement to pass the over-sized (and mainly empty) busses and lorries etc. I'm not sure if these cars have enough ground clearance to do this without ttting the front clam and sills.

If anyone out there with one could measure the front and side clearance (with and without splitter in place, and with 2 occupants) it'd be much appreciated as I don't want to keep the guy hanging on.

An m12 isn't a car I'd be trying to mount curbs with ever. You will destroy it and failing that bugger the geo.

I wouldn't go mouting anything large, but the splitter is 110mm from the ground from memory, the side around 140mm from the ground.

I often drive around the back roads of Surrey, and whilst I don't do "X5" levels of off roading, have yet to find a reason to reverse up.

It's no worse than an Elise height wise (sans front splitter) and a darn sight better than some other cars (you can take those 110mm "square" speed humps with a wheel each side at 30mph easily )

I know what you mean - same applies to most sporty stuff as those low profile tyres demand respect or the rims are shot in no time.

To clarify, when I say "mount the kerb" I'm talking about virtulay stopping the car and crawling up the kerb to minimise the possibility of causing damage, rather than just steer in at whatever speed I would be driving at.

the 6 speed box is used in the focus st170 from what I am led to believe

with a quaife ATB fitted

there is some work in order to get it to fit

Gary at VeganTune has done a few conversions from 5 speed to 6 speed
