Which brand of spanner / socket

Hi guys,


I have managed to get six bolts out so far on my manifolds. The trouble I am having now is that I can't fit a socket or ring spanner over two of the bolts. It is the second top bolt away from the bulkhead (cylinders 7 and 3???). The manifold is too close to the bolt for my Draper and Halford's pro spanners / sockets. Which tool maker produces a suitable alternative with thinner walls.

I had a quick look at using the C end of a 14mm spanner, but there is no way it will have the grip to remove the rusty bolts and I don't want to damage them.

I haven't even started on the bottom set of bolts.

best bet is probably a snapon flank drive plus open ender
if it was me i'd get a decent ring spanner and thin the outside of the ring down with a bench grinder and then bend the shaft of the spanner to the best angle with oxy

Took manifolds of an S some time ago, open ender and a S shaped ring spanner, best investment I made for some time

I hope you have more luck than me - I recently broke several studs on my S1 and ended up removing the heads to drill the studs out (just got it all back together last weekend).

The tool that worked for me (on the nuts that came off without breaking the studs!) was a set of bolt grip sockets by IRWIN which I bought from Machine Mart (order code 040214679, page 169 of their small catalog). As you turn the socket they dig into the nut and grip it firmly - they also have a fairly thin body so should fit between the nut and manifold.

I don't remember having any particular problem getting a spanner on them, but my ring spanners aren't particularly fat ones. I'd be inclined to take an angle grinder to the outside of the ring spanner and see if you can get it to fit without seriously weakening it. If it's a particularly nice spanner you might want to get a cheaper one to sacrifice instead!

I had thought about thinning the spanner head down as a last resort, chrome / vanadium spanners will be a complete bugger to grind though.

As I still have the standard manifolds (with the dents in for spanner access), I assumed that some kind of standard tool would fit. I guess with TVR non-standard comes as standard.

I don’t want to become a PITA Pete, but I don’t suppose you can remember the make of your 14 mm ring spanner that fitted. I would rather not take a grinder to my expensive set and cheap spanners have a nasty habit of making bolt heads round off.
