Steering Wheel Boss

Can someone please tell me the part # for the steering wheel boss.

I dont like the factory wheel so I went shopping for a wheel in Hong Kong Friday night and nobody could inderstand that I was building my own car and that I needed to bolt the boss to a plate on the steering column.... they only had hubs that fit on a splined shaft...Ive tried online but they only have references to production cars.


Can someone pretty please tell me the part # of a boss that fits the Ultima... preferably Momo or Sparco

Do you mean the crushable bit?

I think even Demon-Tweeks sells those, just go to www.demon-tweeks.co.uk and type in 'steering boss'.

I recently fitted a SnapOff quick release unit like Stig uses, so I have the steering wheel bolted to the snap off unit, then the other side of the snap off is mounted onto the crushable bit, then that is bolted to the plate on the steering column. If you've got a decent pillar drill it's easy to make corrections like I had to.

It's probably a good investment, as it makes driving the car a tad difficult without the steering wheel!

Ok, Tweek's kits are not quite what I had in mind... This should fit the bill.

You might have to drill the holes, then again, probably not.

If you look around the site, you should see the snap-off adapters as well.

The Painless RF kit looks good, they even have a UK distributor, might give them a call tomorrow.

The shape of the item on the outside is correct, it's how it attaches to the column that is the problem, the MX5 (like most cars) has a steering column shaft with a spline and a nut to hold the boss on, the wheel screws to the boss.

The Ultima has a plate on the end of the steering column shaft, the boss screws to the plate, rather than fitting on the splined shaft...

Thanks for your help, but I dont want to be guessing from photos on the net, I am in Hong Kong and have to airfreight one in, so I dont have the luxury of easy returns. I have a few final shops to try today, but I am doubtful of finding what I want without having a part number.... If someone can check the part number of their boss that would be great.

Why not just order it from the factory?
You could also buy a replacement splined shaft in the length that you require. Most of the race shops here in the states sell them.

I have one from the factory in my hand and there is no part number on it....can't even tell who its made by.

however it is surplus to my requirements so I could wrap it in a brown box and send it to you.

I am thinking of using a Snap-off type system mounted directly to the column, then use a collapsible spacer and the wheel on the end of that. This way I can use a remote system and put the remote inside the spacer.

I know a few of you have spacers/snap-off wheels and remotes, can anyone help me with these questions.

1. Will the spacer work in this location, i.e between the wheel and the snap off rather than between the snap-off and the column.

2. Does the snap off type system feel like the wheel is removable when you're driving. is there ANY play in the wheel?

The removable boss will go between the steering wheel and the crush boss..... the problem putting it the other way is that the crush boss is sided and thus the rear is to small in diameter to fit to the normal removable boss.

You could replace the central cover/horn button part of the steering wheel with one of these.

If you look at the remote, it's just a little keychain sized alarm, and that seems to be all that's in the center of the wheel so it should fit, I'm sure they could email you a CAD diagram or something...

I have the snap-off type removeable wheel and to drive it feels totally solid with no movement at all.
