ideal 'first' TVR
Discussion
Although I have "had" TVR's all my life, Miss Daisy is my first.
I had no idea of what to go for, the only thing I was looking for was condition and a good chassis.
I could have ended up with a Cerb/Griff/Chim/Tamora
I went for Miss as the chassis had been waxoyled from new and she was a fairly late car.
Just so happened to be a 4.5
I didn't really look at Griffs as I don't like the shape - too old looking, not a classic IMO (unlike the Chim which still looks modern as does the cerb)
Cerbs were on the list but I would have struggled to run one as an everyday car (even with my support) plue they are just too big for me.
Tamoras are fantastic and very under-rated and forgiving but out of my price range - so the Chim it was.
Best decision I made according to Dad (who out of all the cars he ran as company cars said the Chim was the most usesable)
It depends on if its going to be an everyday car - or just something at weekends/sunny days. What price you can afford and what you like.

Each to their own. I am not a fan of the Griff or Cerb - I would own them just so I can say I have had them but they are not in my Top 10 of cars.
I adored the Tamora when it came out and was in Xtacy when I saw Dad drive up in the black prototype tuscan - I fell in love there and then.
But I love my Chimaera and will do my upmost to keep her, even if I have to buy another TVR when its getting to be uneconomical to run her as an everyday car. I have a strong emotional attachment to her. Also Dad test drove her before she left the factory way back when, he went and looked up her notes and saw that there was nothing to fix before she left to go to her first owner - Fate..?

I wouldn't have thought you could say there is an entry level TIV. When I was looking I could afford an early AJP6 engined car or one of the last chims. I went with the chim mainly for the RV8 noise and the fact that I didn't want "issues" with the early AJP6 engines.
I would see what your budget is and then scout round autotrader etc and see what you can get for the cash. Also drive them all as things like power delivery and engine noise do make a lot of difference to ownership.

forthright mc said:If you're worried about the power there's two answers. Either you shouldn't get a TVR or you will probably find the newer ones easier to drive as the power-band starts higher up the rev range. That said, the V8s are perfectly driveable in any weather when you're careful about it.
just wondering what would be the best TVR to buy for someone who has never owned one before. i have always thought a good S series or a 4 ltre Chim would be a great place to start as a Cerb or Tuscan may be a little too excessive for novices.
what do you guys think?
I was after a S series S2 or S3 and looked at about 9 cars up and down the country and found it very hard to find a complete car good/ chassis/ bodywork/interior/mechanicals, there are also less to choose from , look at the classifieds what 18 , how many Chims 95. In the end to try and get a really nice S i was into Chim money, or an problem S then sort it out was the same thing . So i then started looking at Chims , first they are of a lesser age and have not fallen into as many wrong hands ,as the prices have still been quite high until recently. Yes they are more complicated than a S, but It is much easier to find a good car , and when you look at it from all angles its the best value for money in the range , unless very lucky and drop on a good S or well priced Griff, but you could be waiting for a long time , it took me 3 months looking for an S with no luck and 1 to find the Chim.
Hope that gives you some idea.

Haven't you hit the nail on the head? (although your obviously wrong
) Forthright mc, why are you asking us which TVR to buy.. doesn't it just come down to which one floats your boat... I didn't buy a TVR cos I wanted a TVR I bought one cos I wanted a griff!! there are other TVR I really like don't get me wrong, well except wedges, S series, and (just for comedy value) chimps!
But if your looking for a 'sensible' first purchase stay well clear TVRs aren't sensible.. make the decision which one you 'really really' want! Then just make sure you do your utmost to get the best one you can, look after it, be careful with it and enjoy it!

Me too......
loved my S2 (V6).... slightly lacking in power in comparison... but I reckon the fun factor of driving was better/thriling/ rewarding..... if I ever have to sell the Griff I'll be looking for another S... got the TVR bug and cant be without. (refused to sell the S until I had the Griff ran both for 3 months + Maxda 6..... what other car would you do that with
) The S bang for buck cant be beaten IMHO... ( never tried a wedge though.... getting a desire to get a one that has taken a few steriods ....ie a big one )
