The priciple is excellent. The execution is a mixed bag.
For example, if I want to change the air temperature mix or face vs. feet airflow it's a sub-sub-sub menu, whereas it was a simple dial/button on the old car. Navigation is overly complex too - have you tried to get 'information on location'?. Thank goodness for extended voice control - makes things a lot more bearable.

They've put that right on the 3 Series.
Am I correct in thinking that the version of I-Drive on the
current shape 5 Series [ E90 ? ] was BMW's first attempt
at a production TV & interactive controller ?
I understand I-Drive is an optional extra on the new 3 series.
Be interesting to see how many drivers opt for it.
I recently took out the latest generation E60 M5 and during the test drive i managed to have a good play with the I-Drive. At first it all looks a bit much up there on the screen but after 30 min or so i found it ok to use.
I think maybe some of the first reviewers didn't get along with it and everyone else is just jumping on the "i hate I-Drive" bandwagon.
..until it stops working when you are in the south of france in the middle of summer and can't turn the aircon on....technology for technologies sake, a total waste of space. I have bought my last BMW as I am totally fed up with their obsession with dodgy electrical gizmos that offer nothing apart from huge bills to repair when they go wrong. They should have spent the time and effort engineering other areas of their cars that really need attention like the plastic window regulators and chocolate wishbones.......
