Like many enthusiastic drivers - I am fed up with all of the planned increases in speed cameras, road works and traffic congestion. I think I have come up with the perfect plan to change all of this (and heh - I''m sure I''m better qualified to make a judgement on this than someone like Glenda Jackson!). My inspriration came last night after going down a windy motorway slip road. In the right hand lane (empty left hand lane) doing 30 mph (at 11.30 pm!) with her fog lights on (fine weather) - was.........some one''s granny. Oh dear. A couple of bibs on my horn at her, together with flashing my rear foglights at her (once I had get past the obstruction) - was met with complete indifference and probably "why is that hooligan flashing at me?". OK, so here is the plan. Let the Government make everyone sit driving tests every 2-3 years. Clear all of the rubbish/incompetent/elderly/reckless/ singularly untalented drivers off the road. Heh...more revenue for the government (they are happy), less need for revenue raising speed cameras (we are happy), and fewer cars on the road - everyone''s happy. Tell me that I am not wrong! (Please now - can I be transport minister?). Oh, they can drop the tax on fuel as well!

Driving licenses valid for 5 years, leading to retests. I'm sure I would struggle to re-pass, but it should improve driver skill. The main problem would be those driving without a license. This may be tackled by requiring the production of ('photo') license when insuring/taxing/moting. Will never happen tho'

5 year licenses - yes that would be good. Like you say though - it'll never happen. As for those that drive without licences - bring back the stocks - probably a better deterrent than hauling them in front of the beak.
