knuckle joints

has anyone experienced this?

i have renewed the knuckles on the suspension. on the back the nylon cups sat in nicely but when it came to the front they will not go in! the old ones were completely removed. i have the car back on the whells and however much i bounce up and down on the wings they still wont seat!

had a gentle go with a pig skin mallet, just cracked the nylon.

Anyone with any ideas? i dont wanna set the ride height then to find the cup go in 10 miles down the road and have the tyre hit the arch!!

Any help will be much apreciated!

Hahahaha! Yes, I remember this very well indeed. I actually pulled the balls out of the cups and made a tool out of a broomstick in the lathe, exactly the right size and used a hammer to whack it into place. It drove me nuts and I totally destroyed several cups trying!

You managed to get the trumpets out of the cones then, that was the other job where I lost the plot. I used a cone compressor and brute force to "ping" them out, after much swearing, etc, etc.

Todays fun for me was putting the radiator back in the 66 over that bloody 6 bladed fan. It didn't want to go and just as a bolted up the ultimate engine steady, I realised that I hadn't connected the hoses properly, cue taking it all back out again

I hate the bl**dy things!!! What you need to do is pull out the mylon cup and make sure it seats itself in the seat straight. Just done the kncukles on my brother's car and had the same problem. You'll never be able to force them in, or if you do it may damage them. Wait until you have to try and get the rubber to hook over it. If you push the cup in too far you can't get the rubber to stay on.

Try cleaning out the hole for the cup with a bit of emery cloth,there's usually a bit of rust in there,also swarfega on the cup helps it slide into place.

ok, i shall try them all, have to get some more cups at the mo, a bit of fustrated, ham fisted hitting took place!! (oops, living up to my lecturers name of 'bodger!')

Experienced that frustration years ago and one of my smug mates came up with this!!! lots of fun - derusted with a wire brush on flexible drill link (before the days of the Dremmel), wire woolled debris out and filled the recess with the good old fairy liquid - put the new knuckle onto the cone with the rubber cap already fixed - loosed of the spring compressor veeeeery gently (quarter turn at a time) and new joint typically goes in straight in three quarters of the way - tidy things up, drive a mile or two - carefully, and when home check & seating is perfect - done a couple more since then always the same method and have never had to resort to hammer or broken a nylon insert....
Getting the fffff'ing nylon cups out in the first place however - aaaaargh my bleeding knuckes!

i have the opposite probs, struggle to get em in but getting em out is easy!, get the oxy acetalene (cant spell!) in em, i melt them, very carefully mind you! until they form a pool in the bottom, hey presto, out in one go with a screwdriver. i do apreciate that not everyone has gas to hand tho, easy with tho!

use a small nosel tho, gas axe is most definatly not recomended!!

Yep I do the same thing. Burn 'em out. Did you manage to get them in Rob?

yes i did in the end, bought a new pair, old'ens out with the gas, sat there with a roll of emery and got out the crap, a frw gentle persuasions later they went in, may have been the quality of the cups, the ones from minispares were much better!!
