My trusty Primula might be leaving the stable tonight. It's gotta be cash as the prospective buyer is coming over after the banks shut. It's not a huge amount, but I want to be sure I don't get stiffed. What checks should I do on notes to make sure they're genuine?

make sure you can't tear through the silver thread, and also make sure the watermark isn't drawn on

Makes sure it doesn't say "Bank of Toyland" on the back.

Have a couple of "real" notes handy for comparison. You can quite often "feel" that they are not quite right.

(sensible answer alert)

as mentioned above, being able to tear down the note and the metal strip being embedded within it is very important.

As a thought, how about making sure you have one of each note type (5,10,20,50) (of your own) at home tonight so you can compare!?

The feel will normally give it away as the paper is unique and distinctive.

The most difficult thing about forgery is not the printing, not the foil and not the watermark.

It's the paper - bank note paper has a very definite feel about it.

Hold the notes up to the light and check for the watermark. When viewed against a light the foil should be a solid continuous line but when viewed normally the line should be dotted.

I didn't know about the silver tearing thing or the dottedness.

Try it with a note in your pocket at the moment; I used to work in a night club and I did it with every note I took over the bar - very quick and easy to do.

Blimey - you can go here and take a flash tour of UK notes in circulation (but everything to consider has already been covered previously)... www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/virtualtour/virtual_tour_flash.htm

For the truly hard of thinking, there are even videos of how to "hold up to the light" and "tilt the banknote" amongst other tricky technicalities.

Nip down to local police station now and get one of those bank note pens, the one that leave a black mark if it's a dud note, our local nick is selling the pens for £1 each

Very nice! Does this mean I have to stop the hairdresser vibes?

So, with your 911 and nerv's, which is his and which is hers?
