Thought a near miss was if two aircraft got within 500 metres of each other, or similar, in the air? That looks bloomin' close!

Could be, but...

The spokesman said:
there was no question that either aircraft had strayed from its proper path, which should mean there was a distance of some two and a half miles between them.
Now I know they're big aircraft, but they don't look that far apart!

there could easily be 500ft or 1000ft of vertical separation between them.

Fair enough, 1000 ft. vertical seperation is plenty...but I can't see the spokesman's 2 and a half miles anywhere.

...and the one that apparently is closer looks significantly smaller?

...and they're two and a half miles apart???

If they are then that photo's a fake. Anyone care to work out what those planes actually are and how long they are to estimate just how far away they have to be to still be two and a half miles apart yet be in that apparent ratio?
