I use my S1 Elise as daily transport and yesterday morning while stuck in traffic my pride and joy filled with smoke, I though that my heater motor had burnt out, so turned if off and it stopped, BUT on my way into work this morning it happened again with the heater off - please help!

Get out and run like hell, not very constructive but probably a good idea.

What's that phrase again about no smoke without somthing....

The solution is simple.

Smoke = Fire (or at least lots of heat)
Fire = Very Bad

If you dont feel confident enough to investigate and resolve this issue on your own then get it looked at ASAP.

Booked in for a specialist to have a look at, hope it is just steam - I am just a little paranoid as a previous car went up in flames!

Just reread my last post, It wasnt meant to be as sarcastic as it sounded!

Good luck, hopefully its not expensive or serious.

I seem to recall hearing something about steam or smoke in the footwells before... Have you checked the Technical forum archive over at the British Cars Lotus BBS?

When this happens are you sitting in heavy traffic?

If so it may be your brakes, a relative had a problem while they were sitting in havy traffic and had been stopping and starting for a while the brakes Seized up and smoke started pouring from the underside of the car. This was rectified. They never told me the exact problem but it had something to do with a part of the car heating and seizeing up.
