This happened to me once... bloke was a bit of a loose cannon and a serial proposer to (IMHO) absolute mingers. Anyhow, after a couple of months I'd managed to distance myself sufficiently that he decided to ask someone else to be best man (pheww), then a few months after that he'd asked someone else to be his bride.

It's up to you how you want to play it..
Do you consider it to be your worst nightmare or an absolute honour?

The old joke about the bride's ex boyfriends returning their keys always goes down well at the reception, when all the men in the audience drop keys into a bucket. Then he does the same joke for the groom, but nobody gets up - except one fella

actuallay, whatever you fo, fo not go into the day without a sepeech prepared. I st not a good thing seeing the best man die on his feet. I t doesn't have to be particularly funny as the guests will find it funny anyway, buyt make sure yuou know what it is iyou want to say.

it'LL be fine .

I've just been asked by my best mate - same situation as you I guess. Really honoured, but somewhat scared shitless at the prospect.

In terms of Best Man duties - can anyone enlighten me as to what they are? Obviously there is the ceremony, I presume I have to have the rings to hand. Speech at the reception, but what is my role? Something to do with representing the bridesmaids?

Is it the bestman's role to prepare any Stag-do?

Is there anything else that is traditional for the best man to do? (I'm not including the bridesmaids in that before anyone asks! )

Cheers

Phil

Google "best man speeches" Take some bits out of the examples, and elaborate. Worked for me and it went down a treat.

If you are nervous, write it down and don't be afraid to refer to your notes.

What a superb site!

Yep: WRITE YOUR SPEECH IN ADVANCE. AND PRACTICE IT!

You won't get so toungue-tied if you've had a go in front of the mirror. Remember: Everyone there is already on your side. They're having a nice time. They *want* to have a nice time. They know your not a professional comedian/orator/politician and if you can just manage to say a few nice things about the bride and the groom and make even one joke they'll clap away and let you sit down.

Some people get right into the speaking bit and want to put on a long one...my advice is DON'T.

A speech should be like woman's skirt: long enough to cover the subject but short enough to be interesting. No more than five minutes. Time it. If its too long - cut stuff out.

Piece of piss. Done it four times and absolutely made up to do so.

Make sure the speech has a good dose of humour interjected, but not smut. remember there is a good chance his granny/elderly aunts etc etc will be there. Jokes like the bucket can go down well, but make sure you are 110% confident it will work. There is nothing more sure, you will look a if the bride ends up in tears.

Prepare a couple of stinging one liners to deal with hecklers. I found asking one to come to the front and presenting him with a kids activity set provided by the hotel, and saying 'this is keeping the two year olds quiet, might it do the same for you' worked.

Another one was announcing ' Please be quiet, I was like that trying to impress my first bird' then finding out it was actually his first bird.

As above, lay off the booze, until after the speeches, get this right and you'll be drinking for free all night.

I have been best man a few times, and each time was very nervous.

In your speach you are require to:

1, Tell funny and embarasing stories about your mate, ignoring all reference to earlier girl friends or conquests,
2, Thank the bridesmaids " To the bridesmaids "
3, Refrain from telling jokes with a sexual inuendo. I tried the " Wishing them lots of
Ha--Penis gag which fell really flat as the brides inlaws were all devote catholics over from Ireland Oops,
Oh yes and you are required to shag the chief bridesmaid which always ends in tears, and causes you never to see you mate again.

Not that I speaking from experience,!

Congratulations Irish your mate obviously thinks a great deal of your friendship.
I was Best Man at a wedding a few months back and was also very nervous about the speech, it was his second time around and so had to be a bit careful, also hadn't known him from years back so had few anecdotes to recount. Got over the problem by saying that I had researched his family geneology. Made up a family motto 'fortiter ex animo' (my old school motto) and described how he lived his life to that motto also invented some dubious relatives as 'skeletons in the cupboard'
Seemed to go down well. Secret for me was to write it down well in advance and practice often. Surprisingly confidant once I'd settled on the final draft. Good Luck!
