Isn't that nice, doing it for the kids an all that, but how come greenpeace isn't harpooning her for the massive pollution she must cause, using buses, aircraft and a car? She must surely be responsible for the rise in the ocean level all by herself...

not as far, but still a bastard of a journey, only because it involves 3 different kinds of transport

Drive 20 minutes to station (usually after defrosting car for ½ hour first as on top of bloody hill), train for 40 minutes, then bus for further 15. One minute can throw everything right out of whack.

Journey time today: 1hr 45mins. and despite paying my £1.50 sodding machine didn't print ticket for bus, but ate the money anyway.

I might leave now............

I know one of the blokes at Toyota F1, think it might be Mike Gascoyne, commutes from Oxford to Cologne each day! But he has the advantage of a private jet.

Hmm - wonder if she's available to help you with sums?

Trip costs £60, leaving her with £50 = £110 x 5 = £550 x 52 = £28600. And that's for a senior teacher with 30+ yrs in the job.

Of course, she may only be paid a 'day rate' in which case she won't even be paid over the holidays etc.

How much tax will she be paying on £110/wk? I also added the line above that she may well not be paid during the holidays, so her income could well be something like £3500/yr.

Don't forget she only does the trip once a week, plus it's probably cheaper than a return trip train commute to work in this country.

It's cheaper than going from Wigan to London unless you plan it three years in advance.

I like the way she is able to use public transport from her house all the way to Thetford, then it goes tits up and she has to use a car to do the last bit to school. Score one for an integrated transport policy, UK

Nope, you're not way out at all - £28K is about where it stops, for a primary school teacher on the standard pay scale. That's why, if you do the sum correctly, it comes out at £28K.
