TVR replace ALL clucth parts even if some are fine!
Discussion
Mate in to have nasty Gearbox noise sorted.
Drive it up the road and assess that 3rd gear is stuffed (Tuscan) and then most likely it will need a recon t5 and a full clutch - even though it was just the 3rd gear that was gone - all just by listening to it.
That will be 2.5 g's to you sir.
They get clutch out and cover plate is fine - plate a bit worn so they say they WILL replace the clutch in its entirety! WHAT - I said why are they not replacing the few plates that are worn - if even that all plates will show wear - but they are breplacing the WHOLE thing even the cover that is fine.
Ooh we only replace it as one lump - that will be 1100 quid to you sir! (is it GOLD COATED!) I would have told him where to stick it - or may be this is the crap way TVR make a profit and can only get the bit as a whole - which frankly is rubbish as it is an AP Clutch at the plates will be off the shelf.

Hmm, that could save me a few quid next week then
Had a new box fitted by the previous owner at 12k miles, now at 25k with a dead slave cylinder deciding whether to get the clutch done as its close to the 30k miles they are expected to last, but I could perhaps have another 17k miles left...

You're no doubt aware of my saga Rob, but in my experience, be careful who does the work for you, it's a jungle out there!
(If I remember right you use Andy at APM, so at least you're in good hands.
)
One point I'd note is that the labour cost in clutch work is significant, so by only replacing some of the parts of the clutch (if this is prudent), you may actually end up incurring twice the labour cost when the other parts need replacement.
Steve.

It's part of the licensing agreement between TVR and AP as I understand it Jon. Anyone heard different?
Steve.
I keep telling him to stop getting it serviced at TVR dealer at christ know what service rate just to have the book stamped 5.5 years old so way out of warranty. He craps his self every time he goes for a thrash the athe poorly designed engine will blow up - what kind of fun is that! Thinking the good will of having a fully stamped TVR service book with some how get him a large discount on the next big rebuild - er I doubt it!
He is getting the rest (the bits that are fine) back so that IF it ever goes again and then not at main dealer he can presumably just get the relatively cheap plates from AP.

No, the agreement means you cannot buy bits from AP as I understand it. You can only buy through TVR.

Steve_T said:That's what Andy has said, its around 6 hours labour to get to the slave cylinder, 10 more minutes for the clutch, so if there is only around 5k miles of life left in the clutch, then on goes a new one, but if it looks alright (was replaced with the gearbox at 12k and is only halfway through its life) then we'll leave it on there and I can use the money for go-faster bits, or more likely whatever else we spot that wrong with the car

Same kind of Shit with there brakes - had to get even pins for my Tuscan Caliper for an after Sales AP dealer - bloody makes my blood boil. Few hundred quid for some plates - but ooh no have to pay 1100 quid - that is stupid for a 7 - 8" twin plate - I know cos father just bought same but from tilton <500 quid - bastards.
AHrrr that would push me over the edge and I would rip the bloody box clutch and engine out and sell or through it all in the bin just to get away from this CRAP.

you'd hate owning one of our european supers then, they pretty much have the same thing going, whole part or nothing.... guess its easier to keep the books in order and profit margin up.... I'm sure aftersales parts/work brings a sizeable amount to the table... afterall, TVR isnt just a kit-car anymore.... or is it?
£1700.00 for a new cluth and flywheel yesterday. Not sold as seperate parts and my clutch was fine, just lost the fingers on the pressure plate. When put back together, the new parts won't fit properly to the flywheel - new flywheel means taking the damn thing apart again - double the labour. Oh how I laughed!

I don't understand this .. why are you paying for the labour again? the clutch fitting assemblies are well known .. what combination of parts are your fitters using?
you only run into problems if you have the very early style flywheels and bellhousings, say 1995/early 1996 .. anything else just needs a bit of machining and a short slave cylinder to fit the later clutches (you machine the nose of the slave cylinder housing down and relieve the inner section of the flywheel to clear the centre plate springs . 40 quid tops at a local engineering firm) . 1700 pounds is a very big bill .. I'd question that one unless their labour rate is 100 pounds/hour!
I really don't understand this thread either. A full clutch kit for a Tuscan/Cerbera is £457 exc VAT! That is the recommended retail price. They are only available via TVR as I presume they paid AP to develop the clutch assembly for them, and therefore TVR have the 'rights' to it. Sometimes you need to replace the flywheel as well if it is badly scored or heat marked. A flywheel is just less than £150. We do tend to recommend that the whole clutch kit is replaced while everything is apart, however if the plates are deemed serviceable they can be re-used. After all it's your car and you can say what you want to have done to it, if in doubt ask to see the old components and judge from there.
Hope that this helps, best regards

cerbagriff's post is even more confusing on re-reading as the clutch is the first thing that goes on, and if it doesn't fit you know straight away, not after the whole thing has been put back together ..
if it's been put back together and the clutch/flywheel is wrong then the clutch centre plate nearest the flywheel will be u/s.
But also, the cerbie in your profile is a very late one which should have the later clutch as std so there shouldn't be ANY interference problems at all!
you definately need to see your car and all the bits being fitted as it sounds like there's someone fitting your clutch who hasn't a clue what they're doing...

Are you suggesting they should have just changed the two plates and re-used the rest of it then?
Here's what happened. Lost ability to change gear - the cluth fingers on the pressure plate failed, oh and the seals on the slave cylinder (I think) were weeping and needed replacing - apparantly a common occurance. Went to specialist who took apart and had to put whole clutch thingy in as TVR do not sell parts seperately (although the clutch itself was OK). When the car was rebuilt and road tested there was a judder from the clutch. They took it apart again to find the flywheel was 'damaged' and had to also be replaced. They only charged me some of the labour to restrip and replace.
Just got out the bill
Clutch assembly £557
Seals and Sundries £ 82.87
Flywheel £175
Labour 11.5hrs £690
VAT £263.35
Total (gulp) £1768.23
Still the bill was £1,700+.

£1700 for a clutch and flywheel!!
I was under the impression the 'normal' price for having a new clutch fitted was around the £800 mark, but no more than £1000 if the flywheel is included!
Pity we can't have a 'league table' of some of these companies that charge silly money, and have a comparison that factors in value for money and customer satisfaction, now that would make interesting reading.
