Becoming an MP...
Discussion
Uness your a front bencher then I doubt you'd make much of an impact nationaly anyhow.
Anyone can stand localy for election, but most peoples views/most seats are decided before a vote is cast, unless you find a marginal seat with a local issue (Hamiltons etc) you'll have to join a party and work for them, and that means let them do your thinking for you.

I let the Daily Mail do my thinking for me, that used to mean I was a tory but they seem to be becoming hippies now. I get the feeling that the pistonheads constituency would probably slightly right of Thatcher though

My parents have encoraged me to gte involved in Politics and become and MP.
I probably will get involved in Politics at some point, but i've no desire to become a public figure. In the shadowy background will do just fine, its not what you know, its who you know
Chancellor of the XXXchequer
I did ponder the idea during my student days but my girlfriend said she'd leave me! This may be due to the fact that we're on such opposite sides of the political spectrum that we try not to discuss it too much - not ideal if one of you is actually "in" politics!
In the background I still harbour the odd thought towards it - primarily because I get so frustrated at the current government that I think "Even I must be able to do a better job than this!"

And parliamentary candidate selection systems (for all parties) want to find (whenever possible, although you do get the exceptions) good little sheep who will do what the party leadership wants them to do, and not think too much for themselves. I've been of the opinion for a while that the party political system is the enemy of democracy.
