This is something that I have never gotten around to doing. I suppose, really I should. Something that I was wondering is this..

i) do you need to make said 'Will' using a solicitor?

ii) on a practical point.....okay so I make a will and it's sitting in a box or vault somewhere.....how does the person looking after the 'Will' know that I'm dead ( in the case of a sudden and unexpected death)?

Had my will made up by a specialist company but there is nothing to stop you making your own--> www.shadowlight.clara.net/LifeRites/death/wills.html

One tip worth considering. Besides the will, write an informal letter to cover both death and emergency (or perhaps a death one inside the emergency one). Leave a copy with the person you are making responsible (such as your parents). In it list:
- What to do in an emergency (e.g. coma)
- Where to find the money
- Where to find other things that will be important (passwords, documents on your computer)
- Bills to make sure are paid
- Key contacts (e.g. your accountant)
- Any other things you want sorted/managed (e.g. mine says where my rented garage is, and where the landlord can be contacted)
- A list of things that are actually worth something, and should be properly auctioned/sold
- People who you would want advised (who your executor/person may not know, or cannot contact)
- And if you are likely to be hit with inheritance tax, perhaps a list of things that you have not specifically included in the will, that should 'disappear' in a van before the estate contents are drawn up. So you might want your brother to have that Home Cinema system that you took out a second mortgage to buy. Hypothetically, of course, as this is illegal. So you shouldn't do it.

The letter(s) has no legal basis, but it would sure make things much simpler at a very difficult time.
