Looking at one of these at the end of the year (cant afford brand new, would prefer a nearly new anyway). Local dealer had one on the fleet though not demonstrator - all I can say is fceking amazing. Driven a 530 with the 230BHP engine and thats damn quick. The 535d is just a different league....
Diesel sports car? Damn right. Go for a test drive and see for yourself - its a bomb on wheels! Oh, and just to note, not driven a current M3 - only the previous model so cant comment on that model.

Yep sell the M3, buy a 535d Touring and get it chipped. If I hadn't of already signed the paperwork on the X5 that's what I would have done. Convinced a friend to get one and had it chipped by DMS. Through the gears it is stupidly fast and I think the best looking 5 by far, so long as it's the Sport, all at 38mpg.
I'd recommend the panaoramic roof otherwise it can be quite a dark place. The HUD is quite good too. I've taken an M5 for a test drive and I can honestly say I'd save the £20+K and take the 535d.

I'm collecting my 535D Sport (Saloon) on Monday & i'd be right in saying i'm rather excited. My modified RS6 looks to have been sold & this was the natural replacement as with other investments taking priority this year, i wanted something that would save me money over the 12-18 month ownership life. My RS6 was rather costly to run & maintain, so looking forward to the savings.
According to every article i've read, the 535D engine is regarded as the best diesel engine in the world & both mid-range & torque are awesome. I'm probably getting the DMS re-map, as 0-60 in 5.5secs & still returning 38MPG is not to me sniffed at.

I'd read that the 535d was based on a different (older) engine block than the 530d one. The result its that it is noiser than the 530d ?? Might be worth getting a 530d and chipping it ??.. quite a price differential between 530d and 535d.
Personally I test drove the 535d and loved it, just the lack of equipment as standard that put me off, by time I'd spec'd the bits I wanted it was £42k and that was without the so called necessary satnav. Might look at a second hand one when I get bored of my present car, let someone else loose laods of ££ on adding extras that should be standard...

Im not an owner or an expert on the 535D but a do run a 330D which has been DMSd. It really is a fantastic engine (thats with just the 1 turbo) and I agree with others here who think its the best looking 5 series. However I dont think going to see 38 mpg. Definitely going to be on my short list later in the year.

Personally I think the whole sat nav thing is over-hyped, especially when you can buy a hand-held for £300.
I think I'll get a PX price on this car. Somebody else has taken the "no sat nav' hit, so come resale I should be quids in.

Is it also because saloons command a premium over estates?
I have just had my X5 chipped by DMS, already a quick unit but now simply superb.
I also drove an M5 last friday and found it pretty low on torque and fairly linear on acceleration. It also look shideous. The touring is a far better bet and am seriously considering one. DMS state they can glean an extra 70bhp form the TT Diesel unit and still return above 30 mpg.

I agree, touring's more of a premium, Patrico, you have no idea what you are talking about.
