I currently work a continental shift but the factory has just anounced redundancies. My job should be safe but if I stay I will have to go on a 3 shift 5 day rota or double days.

Those of you that are on shifts can I ask what shift allowance you get for morings/noons/nights.(not interested in salary just the shift allowance)

They are offering 18% here for the 3 shift rota which seems rather low to me.

A freind of mine gets 20/30/40% respectivly at a well know electronics manufacturer.

Thanks

I think we used to get normal rate for days 0600 onwards. If we worked a late shift we got time and a third after 1600 and time and a half after 2200. This wasn't a rolling shift pattern though as only one or two people worked abnormal hours.

I get 20% for working a rolling shift pattern.

5 days 0600-1400
2 days off
5 days 1400-2200
2 days off
5 nights 2200-0600
6 days off. Then the pattern starts again.
I also get time and half for working weekends, so another 14% is added for that.
Total premium is thus 34%

I work 2 days 07:00 to 19:00 EG Monday Tuesday, 2 nights 19:00 to 07:00 EG Wednesday Thursday followd by 4 days off EG Friday Saturday Sunday Monday. Then it starts over again.
Obviously it moves on a day each week and so we effectively have an 8 day week. We get 20% shift allowance for this with Overtime at Time and a half during weekdays with Double for Sundays.
Bank holidays are worked as part of the shift and we get 23 days holiday as normal entitlement. 4 Days hols give you up to 12 days off work so it is quite generous. This gives the company 24/7/365 cover with only Christmas day/Boxing day and New years day having special arrangements for overtime pay.(more money and time in lieu)

I have been working this for 8 years and find it pretty good, but if you've got kids then you lose weekends a lot which may not suit some. The bonus is 4 days off midweek when places are quieter.

Thanks guys.

Anyone know what kind of legal footing we have regarding changing shifts. We signed a contract for continental shifts now they are saying that we have to to three shifts with 18% can they force us to do that?
