Balance between personal freedom & law enforcement
Discussion
Apparently US Law enforcement are pressuring Google to give data relating internet crime. So, at what point does civil liberties take priority over law enforcement.
If you asked me on a personal level, "would you trade off access to your Google searches in exchange for catching child abusers?" I'd say "yes". However, on a broader level you can't help wonder if the information gleened could be used for all sorts of purpose - political opposition, for example. It's a dilemma!

No way, it will have crap all real effect on child abuse, and will open the door to what they really want to monitor.
Reasons like child abuse and terrorism are only used because noone would dare go against it, once they get their way through that they start looking at all the stuff they really want to monitor.
I certainly dont want to go to prison because I happened to search for the wrong thing, it would be easy to do by accident as well, or even scarier, by malice if you step away from the computer and some clown finds it funny to type in bunch of 'illegal' keywords. Frankly I doubt whether pedophiles are going to go onto google and search for 'child porn' or whatever anyway, they probably have their own underground networks and codewords.

Interesting dilemma, When does the right to search for sex offenders end, and the search for "current" political miscreants cease. Even when those "political miscreants" are legal?
Isn't THIS when freedom goes out of the window? Hitler would have loved it. A very convenient way of keeping your political opponents views quiet....
Maybe CHINA can show them how THEY do it...

Correct! This was stopped by the Supreme court once and probably will be again. At least watered down to a great extent.
The net is not like the real world, it's much more complicated than that. I can imagine the american FBI running around tracking millions of IP numbers because on one day millions of web users do a combined search for the phrase "dirty bomb" or "kiddy porn" or "hijacking", or a thousand other compromising searches..... What do they hope to achieve from this? I doubt whether any evidence of this kind could ever be admitted to a court of law. All they can say is that someone using a device attached to your internet connection made a search for X. They have no way of knowing who it was that did that search. They can't prosecute unless they can prove who the guilty party is........................... oh wait, speed cameras.......
we're all
ed "O wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beautious mankind is!
O brave new world,
That has such people in't!"
oh the irony!
At two stations that I know of MilnerR, computers are monitoring automatically every phone call, fax. internet traffic etc out of the UK for phrases such as this.
True, they may not prosecute, but they MAY affect your future job prospects, (particularly if not right wing)...........Or even worse........
.....GREEN!
Your freedom to THINK is at stake.......

Socialist, Liberal and Tory all agree that THIS was our greatest day in 1215, That's when we started bashin' each other over the 'ed, and rightly so!
Demochracy started here! The First place in the world......
Magna Carta Day!........umteenth? of June, (I think)...
Let's Go for It!........Our greatest ever gift to the world I think!........
