Giving up the

I've decided that I'm going to give up drinking for a while, the longest that I managed prior to this was 6 weeks, so will I be able to beat it or am I going to fail miserably!

I've gone for one week so far without touching the laughing juice and if I remember rightly the first fortnight was the toughest, so here's hoping that this time next week it will be plain sailing (although I doubt it)!

Anybody else currently giving/given up?

Please note that this is not going to be a permanent thing!

Why do you have to give up completely? and why just for six weeks?

Cant you just cut down and drink moderately if you think you are drinking too much?

If I get to the stage where I really want a drink when I come home, I wont have one, maybe even for a few days, might have a bottle of wine one night, maybe a pint or three during the week, the odd scotch.

So how much are you getting through then? if you think it is bad enough to want to quit.

I wouldn't say that I drink to excess, as a summary for the week I guess it looks like this;

During the week - 3 bottles of red wine plus the equivalent of 6 pints of lager.
Weekend (fri and sat) - about 15-20 vodka and cokes and 'some' beer.

I don't particularly only want to give up for 6 weeks it's just that's how long I managed last time. The reason for giving up is to try and keep on top of my beer gut (hasn't appeared yet and want to keep it that way) and to give my body a break for a while!

Six days is hard enough man, six weeks: The stress would send me to drink!! Good luck. My money is on midway through week 2

Is this all in preparation for becoming a lean focused race driver?

I'm going through a re-tox at the moment. I feel I did not have enough to drink over the Christmas period.

I gave up for a year once. Funnily enough, it didn't bother me too much. I started again when I realised that soft drinks were just as expensive as alcoholic ones, and I wasn't drinking enough to have much effect on my health.

The main problem that I found with giving up was how boring the non-alcoholic drinks in pubs and bars were. You get the very occasional bar that does non-alcoholic cocktails (which are lovely), but otherwise you're stuck with ludicrously sugary "orange and passion fruit" things, or just plain old orange juice! boring!

I'm not giving up drinking - but I HAVE given up "hard liquor".

Feel loads better for it, too.

I gave up for 6 months once. Trouble is all my mates at the time were pissheads, so I ended up just tagging along with them when they went out drinking. As a result I quickly found out a) how much of a bunch of tossers my mates were when they were drunk and b) by obvious deduction, how much of a tosser I am when drunk.

The most boring 6 months of my life and I felt no better for it.

I made a New Year's resolution to give up drinking mid week. I did the same last year and managed to do so for four and a half months. Not bad considering I used to drink every night. I have increased my running this year dramatically and ran 17 miles last week. I find that training nearly every night has stopped the urge to knock back a few glasses of red each night (and more on a Saturday). Quite peculiar really and, I must say, rather refreshing. I feel that all the good that I am doing will be undone by drinking.

I think that allowing yourself a drink once a week is no bad thing. It is quite difficult to give up entirely.

Good luck!
