Hi,
Ive posted on here quite a lot in the last week or so as i am very actively looing for a s series.
Ive seen a couple but been looking at one in particular lots. Seen it three times now and the chassis looks good, body/wheels etc all look great, interior is great...starts first time and has a V8 stainless exhaust on the 2.8 V6 so sounds fantastic!
PROBLEM THOUGH! Took her for a drive today and whilst it idles well, and drives slowly as i would have expected, it was gutless as hell! So dissapointed!
Any idea what this could be? It wasnt misfiring but just not wanting to play. When i put my foot down it just felt to restricted and no 'get up and go'. This is the first one ive been in so ive nothing to compare with, but if i was in first gear doing 2000 rpm and put my foot to the floor, it wouldnt spin up or do anything i would call....TVR'ish!
Help would be graetly appreciated as i really like her if she went as well a she looks!
Many thanks

I don't know if there is a problem with the car you tested but I took mine round the block today before going off to be Cossied and it definately tried to go sideways and spin up on me.
Keep your eye open on the various local forums and you'll soon find a meet thats happening soon..
Personally, I struggle to not light the back up at this time of year, so I'd not be too worried at the moment.. However, does sound like she'd not too happy. Any one of a number of possible things; without a good look, very difficult to say.
What I would say is that the driving experience is very different to hot hatches, so if you are used to a more modern sporty car, you may find the V6 isn't as fast. Depends on what your expectation/mental comparison is.

I appreciate what you say with the difference between hot hatches and this car, and i also appreciate that V6's are nutoriously relaxed in their power delivery with it being so smooth but it was dead!
My first car which was a golf mk2 1.3 was more powerful! Seems such as shame as it was such a nice car...the guy even i test drove the car with said 'it isnt as i would have thought!'

Hi
It should of been better than that... may i add
Is it an S1 - you mention 2.8. If so then they dont have an ECU in the same way as the S2/S3 ones, ive not heard of anyone chip mapping their S1.
I once test drove a 280i tasmin, same engine & it too was really dissapointing. I think they can easily get bogged down but i'm not sure what it is thats wrong, maybe fuelling, maybe out of tune.
I would say it was a bad one.
Also how do you get a V8 exhaust manifold onto just 6 outlets !!! just kidding
I would say, go out ASAP and drive a couple more, even if there not your choice of car, it will give you back the confidence.
I have spent some time sliding mine sideways (with tuition) and they are a well balanced car.
Let us know how you get on

I wasnt too sure either Giles, but it did seem more than bogged down...it really was such a disapointment! I drove her the third time i viewed her so i was so keen!
It must have been something MAJOR as there was no power! I remember a friend of mines mum used to have a granada 2.8 when i was younger and that really did shift for the tank it was!
Ive got my eyes out though!
Im torn between wedges and s series now!!
decisions decisions!

The 2,8 is quite a peaky engine compared to the 2,9 which has noticeably more torque (especially with cats).
They do react badly to some of the 'performance' exhausts. I remember when I had a exhaust fitted, the dealer at the time said he was going to fit a JP one because they had fitted another make to S1 previously and it was found to be all noise and no go.....
I guess the 2,8 likes more back-pressure or something?
Also it very sensitive to the performance of the airflow sensor. The acceleration mixture is enriched by the dynamic balance of the sprung plate. ie you floor the gas and the plate swings open. The plate is underdamped so it overshoots or swings too far and temporarily enriches the mix. But it takes very little in the way of crud and lack of maintenance before it all goes sub-optimum.

Definalty doesnt seem right.
I wouldnt dare plant my foot in 1st unless it was very dry and very straight.
They are not fast cars but are well balanced.
But the S's slight lack of power works well in the rain.
I was doing a TVR track day at Snetterton last year in the rain.
There was only two cars I couldnt overtake, a T350 and a noble M12.
Eveything else just couldnt get the power down. Those who wouldnt let me pass ended up just spinning of the circuit while trying to loose me!!!
Chimps, cerbs and the poor fella who ended up trashing his tuscan into the pit straight.
That was a good day, for me anyway!!!

Yeah, i thought as much! Shame, but there we are. It was at a loal garage, its the one on autotrader for £4995. As i said, i was seriously considering buying her until the drive! I didnt jump in and just stuff my foot down but i had no choice!
Shame but she will go to a good home i'm sure...i told the garage id be very interested if it was sorted and he was going to get back to me....ive heard nothing for over a week so i guess thats a hint! lol

Matt you must go out in another asap. where r u in the country ?
Have you checked out the pistonheads classifieds ? some of the best cars will be in there.
I booted my S2 in first this week, the wheels slipped slightly but the immediate red line & the feeling of my stomach trying to escape through my back meant i had to change up. Bear in mind i have good tyres & new rear shocks etc so well set up. I happily let the grip slip on occassions with a dab of the oversteer pedal.
The S will never be lightning quick, as the V6 delivery is a slower build of power, but it should always put a big 'TVR' grin on your face.
Find another one & give it a blast...... or come out with me for half an hour
Giles

Thats what i thought it should have done!
Ive been seriously looking at wedges recently with the experiance i had in the S, only as i passed on on the journey home last week!
There is a lot more room in a 350I as i am 6.0ft which i would say is the comfortable max in a S1??? although im sure there are many people who are tall with them, especially the S2 with the longer doors.
So its a S series V Wedge...!!

I've had problems with the fuel relay on my S1. Over time, it melts and eventually this means that the car effectively runs out of fuel (as the pump stops pumping).
Anyway, it degrades fairly gradually and I wonder whether checking replacing this may make a difference. It's a large pink-purple relay on the LHS of the passenger footwell. You have to pull the trim under the glovebox down (it's velco'ed) to access it.
Anyone else had similar problems with their S1? I know I really out to get an electrian to sort it, but replacing the relay once or twice a year is the easy option.

If your relay keeps failing, check that the terminals fit the relay properly. If they're loose they won't conduct heat away from the relay so well, and also will generate some heat of their own. If it still keeps failing then it may be you have an intermittant failure elsewhere in the circuit. This will make the pump stutter slightly, which may not be noticeable, but each time it does that you will get a current surge through the relay as the pump comes back up to speed.
