Sky by Broadband film & sports downloads
Discussion
Any one else had a look at this? I don't have a Sky movies subscription (just sports and everything else) but it looks as though you can download full feature films - current crop include i -Robot, Resident Evil:Apocolypse, Spider Man 2, Day after Tomorrow and loads of others it seems. The films appear to be about 500-700mb in size.

hmmmmmmm.............................not impressed.
It's all streamed video, not actually downloadable. Now I've got a 1373.7 Kbps (just tested actual speed) broadband connection and even on a 7mb sports clip it stopped halfway through to buffer more. I can't see anyone trying to watch a 2hr movie if it does that every minute or so.
Oh well.......back to
I guess.

The web site I looked at implied that the Movies would be downloaded to your PC in advance of you watching them. I also seem to remember that they were going to use DRM to ensure you could only watch the movies on the PC you downloaded them to and only for 30 days.
Hmmmn. DRM has never worked for me. I *DO* fancy giving this a go (I have a Media Center under the telly) as it would make sense for me to be able to watch whatever the current crop of Sky Movies films is as and when I feel like it (given the download speed) rather than needing to wait for a broadcast and popping it on Sky+.
I have a lousy Broadband connection (512k) though as ADSL in my neck of the woods is utterly rubbish. Maybe one day they'll put a mini-Exchange near me and I'll be able to get 24MB stuff....I expect that first, however, Hell will freeze over.

I find this a pretty good service. The movies arnt so far as Im aware streamed.. I just set a couple to d/l overnight and watch them as and when.
One thing to watch is that once you register its locked to one pc. I made this mistake and set up the account on my work laptop rather than the nice new shiny media centre pc at home. I called Sky and they were able to reset it and I registered again but still a bit of a fag.

Its a bit of a pain that. I'd like to be able to download the movies - and then either watch them with the Mrs in the lounge or watch them on my Study PC if she wants the lounge for other reasons...which I'd be able to do with, ahem, their competition...ahem.
Well I've just tried Sky by Broadband.
Shortly after installing it it updated itself. The update buggered my graphics card drivers and the KService (download engine) started hanging on startup. Media Center started to refuse to launch at a decent speed and the Event Log got filled with errors.
Needless to say I uninstalled it - and have spent a few hours repairing the damage by re-installing graphics drivers and so on - I think the PC is back to how it was.
The concept of the service is brilliant. But it seems to be in its early days yet and until they've sorted out reliability and compatibility I won't be trying again.
Still I did manage to download two movies - which I can still watch (for the remaining 30 days).
I HATE DRM though. The two movies I have paid for with my Sky Movies subscription I cannot watch on
* other PCs around my house
* My laptop whilst away on business
* on my (soon to own) "Movie iPod thingy" (if I get one)
Whereas if I use the (ahem) competition I can do all those things.
Hello Hollywood.
Find a fairer way of protecting your IPR. I've bought and paid for your sodding product and I can't do what I want with it. If you don't stop treating me like a crim perhaps I'll start acting like one!
