Get 500bhp from your TVR V8

TVR Power supercharges Rover-engined TVRs

TVR Power's supercharger installation
TVR Power's supercharger installation
TVR Power, together with automotive design consultancy Autodesign, is offering a supercharger upgrade for V8s -- serpentine or pre-serpentine --  that could boost your Rover engine's power to 500bhp.

Two options are on offer, both using a Rotrex centrifugal supercharger, whose advantages are said to be reliability, smooth power delivery and quietness. Both add secondary sealing between the cylinder head and block to withstand the increased combustion pressures, a new cam with revised profiles, and a new, optimised air induction system.

The SC500 C30 option adds over 50bhp with, said TVR Power, minimal change as the performance increase is within the limitations of the engine and drive-train systems. The SC500 C38 aims to deliver 500bhp. To achieve this, the engine, driveline and management systems will be changed. An air to air intercooler will be added to increase performance by a further five per cent during spring 2006.

The 500bhp option also features cross-bolting with revised compression ratio, forged pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft, lighter flywheel and clutch, plus an uprated fuel pump and injectors.

The cooling system might need uprating too...

Cross-bolted bottom end should knock the price up alot!

Sound good for the C30 base model though - might get bhp up to the std Griff / Chim 500 bhp (320) level.

Very interesting - but I would need to be convinced that the rest of the car was up to this kind of power level. TVR's don't, as a rule, lack power or acceleration. The key issue is putting it down on the road without meeting your maker.

A 500bhp Chimera or Griff is pointless unless you can control it, otherwise you won't see the benefit of the increase in power. What you will see is the world going sideways as you go through a hedge.

Well it may be a bit hairy but i'd have a big grin on my face trying to control it..

Chim's aren't that wild. My Old E28 M5 was more of a handfull than my Chim.

Over low 300bhp you really start having to do the brakes big time and them suspension.

But fine with 400bhp - Well if you can live with going sideways alot! With big smile on face.

New bottom end is a big step.

Ah yes but a 450 has about 245bhp!

Good job mines X-bolted

Wouldn't think it's that far of being ready for the SC500 C38

yours with all it mods (Vixpy1 tell me it IS well modded - x-bolted bottom end is not std and all the other bit).

Your probably would get mid 400's with the blower but 500 Hmm - may be on a 5.5.

Are talking cross-bolted, carrilo's forged lower comp pistons, etc etc?

I'd be happy with mid 4's from an old RV8

THAT Would tax the chassis (Tucan Rcaer power AND more Torque) maybe a bit much. I'm gonna stop at 420-430.

John,

Lots of rv8's are cross bolted as standard. All the pukka conversion needs is some low comp forged pistons, decent rings and a re-balance. It could even retain stock rods imo, if the rev limit isn't increased although I imagine steel rods will be offerred. I suspect boost will be around 12-15 psi max and the 500 hp would be from the largest capacity engine they propose to use.

but who would you know if cross-bolted if adhoc from factory unless sump off.

5.5 to the spec of the 384bhp engine on the site (MASSIVE money) and then the blower stuff on top PHEwww.

That will really hurt the pocket and kill the t5!

Think the blower on std engine sound great though for intermediate Thrust.

Not every TVR get 500hp? according to the article its around 50+hp on a V8

A cost effective engineering solution to achieve 50+ hp gains over the standard engine with minimal change as the performance increase is within the limitations of the engine and drive-train systems.

So when you have a 245hp V8 you get around 300hp and a 450hp brings 500+hp...? Or am I missing a point

There's been a Powerdyne 6/7psi and a Vortech 12/15psi out for a while for the RV8

And even better on one thats intermediate before adding a blower

I agree that the Fully Monty C38 sounds very expensive, but the +50bhp C30 sounds interesting.

Well i won't get into what HP mine actually has but the Power to weight even with 245 is higher than my old E28 M5 and my Chim definitely is more tractable both in a straight line and round bends.

I think what i'm getting at is that there is no definitive answer. What is right for one person isn't right for another.

There is a guy in Sprint with a Griff pumping out over 500bhp and he certainly doesnt think thats pointless

Guessing but a full 500bhp motor is going to cost more than a mid 90's Chim (the whole car)! the higher the base spec the higher the gain.

A std RV8 500 make about if you take V8 Dev number (engine dyno) and about 260 at SRR (have heard of alot less than this Vixpy1!) so 50 bhp on this might scrap it upto a true 310 - 320 (i.e. the TVR (oh how we laughed offical figures!).

Different blower pressure is of course a huge factor if the bottom end is up to the task.

Lightly tweeked LS6 will show 420+ and LS7 over 500 out of the crate.

Then you have to have good (full) exhaust to make it all worth while - the std TVR one is well er Not Good.

No, I said it is pointless if you can't control it.

Any V8 TVR uprated to this kind of power level would need to be heavily modified in many other areas to get any real benefit.

It would seem to me that by the time you had done all that work and paid out what must be a very sizeable sum you would be better of getting a Sagaris or Tuscan.

Just my opinion, and I do applaud the results of the tuners/modifiers. I do think there will be a very limited market for this kind of conversion work though.

I think if you're spending that much money on an engine rebuild & blower conversion i somehow think the cost of an exhaust isn't gonna put you off...
