Birds singing in the middle of the night
Discussion
I mean the feathered variety before anyone says anything!
Last night I went to bed at 1230am ish and there was a robin singing outside my window. Now, I'm pretty sure it should have been asleep and I could have understood it if it was 4am, is this a strange result of light pollution or perfectly normal?!

I noticed this last night at home...although I dismissed it as i'd also got something 'medicinal' in my cigarette at the time
how odd!

It's all to do with urban glow messing with the birds normal sleep/awake cycles. At work I get the most amazing birds chorus at all times of the night. Being on the edge of liverpool and in the middle of a large busniess park is the cause AFAIK. The birds just always think it's dusk and so constantly sing their heads off. Really weird at 3am, I must admit.
The cats set off our security light the other night. Next thing we know a bird is making an awful racket. Visions of feathers all over the house led to leaping out of bed to see if the cats had caught it, but no, cat went back in the catflap without bothering about (what turned out to be) the robin.
It was flitting from branch to branch singing its little heart out, bloody loud too!
Security light goes off, it stops. Must have really messed with its head, poor thing!

sure it wasn't a nightingale coming home from a fancy dress party?
Can't say I've noticed birds singing here in the countryside, but they probably get scared off by the noisy screech owls that screech all night long.
Mind you the chickens make a racket when the fox is on the prowl.
Who said living in the countryside was quiet.
not to self, get ear plugs
