I've been offered the chance to navigate on the Winter Challenge, organised by the Classic Rally Association, which is basically a 6-day regularity rally starting in Paris and finishing in Monte Carlo (more details here)

I've not been abroad for 5 years (unless you count the weekly commute to Wales) and vaguely remember things like filling in E111 forms and suchlike. Someone told me that these are no longer valid, and mentioned a European Medical Card (), any clues as to how I should go about obtaining one?

Any advice on thermal underwear would also be appreciated!

You still need to fill in the E111 form then get it stamped by the post office, it then gets sent off and they send you a card. They can be picked up from any post office, I believe.

They are definitely worth having, was in Germany recently and a friend broke some ribs, the first thing they asked for at the hospital was the card! I would also think about taking out some travel insurance, about £10ish for the week.

Ta muchly chaps, have just filled in an application, 7 days sounds good but I'm glad I haven't left it too late...

Really looking forward to it. The finish is at the Hotel de Paris, Casino Square. Just hope that Peter and I make it that far

Damn right. Just make sure you follow the washing instructions or you end up with a set suitable for action man, they have high wool content.

If you're going to France you need a document called a PASSPORT.

You guys are going to like this suggestion...

If you want thermal underwear consider buying silk (you can mail order from a company called Patra - google them) - silk is an incredibly effective insulator and has the advantage of being very thin so it's easier to layer under your clothes than traditional thermal underwear. Apparently it's worn by those undertaking expeditions to cold places!
