Anyone using a Pioneer AVIC-X1R Sat nav kit?

I'm on the verge of upgrading my Tuscan's stereo to this apparently wonderful piece of kit with ipod connection, full sat nav, DVD player etc. Is anyone using one out there and if so, is it as lovely as it sounds or tragically flawed in someway? Thanks in advance!

I have one too, the AVIC itself is a wonderful piece of kit, have used it in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium as well as the UK, it has not missed a beat. The ipod adapter is not all that though, it does work, but at a very basic level.
The Alpine equivalent is better if you are happy to spend the extra.

Thansk Ribol - Could you specify what you mean by basic level? As long as I can navigate through dozens of very long playlists I'll be ok - not too concerned about on-the-go or other functionality. Does it support playlist functionality reasonably well?

If you want to set your ipod to shuffle then it is fine. The AVIC will not display what track is playing for instance.

I am not a techie so thinking I was missing something I rang someone I know in Pioneer and they confirmed it was not me.
If you want to find a particular track/album and play it, forget it. It is easier to set it up on the ipod before you plug it in but even then it is at best hit and miss.
I have used the equivalent Alpine satnav on another car and as a satnav it was no better. I have heard(not tried it myself) that the Alpine does interface much better with the ipod. It seems to suffer other minor problems like not carrying on where it left off with the ipod when you leave the car, no big deal.

The heat unit is superb but the Ipod bit is cr@p! As has been said it's fine if you just want shuffle but anything more is just to much of a pain to be of worth. You might think that the display on the head unit would show the full Ipod menu as it's a 6.5" screen, bit no - you just get the 1st (8???) characters of the artist name/track name/playlist etc. Trying to navigate thru' this to get to a specific albumn or track is just to much bother. I find that the Ipod crashes all to frequently as well, trying to skip forwards thru' tracks quickly seems to send it bananas.
I think the way to go is to connect the Ipod to the head unit (actually the hide away unit) via rca leads into the "ext" input - this way you could just control the Ipod as normal.

Glad to see it isn't just me then. I have to say though in my case(I have a gen 4 ipod) it has not crashed once when connected to the Pioneer interface. Your external connection idea is a good one but mine is tucked away in the boot for security reasons and then also the ipod would be relying on it's own battery which is no good for a long drive. I suppose you can't have everything.
Can you not buy an adaptor that plugs into the ciggy lighter in the car for the i-Pod?
I have thought about an I-Pod too, have to admit, I know nothing about them though. My multi CD box doesn't play WMA /MP3, and if you take the DVD out of the head unit to play a WMA/MP3 CD, the navigation is crippled.

Once the route is programmed you can take the mapping DVD out, it stores it to memory and still works, but not very convenient regardless.
Yes, you can buy a car charger for ipods they sell them all over the place, the only problem with that is I don't do wires, if I did I would not have spent nearly £1k on an AVIC.
The ipod is great but the way it works with the AVIC is a bit naff for reasons given above. Spoke to someone I know at Pioneer about it, he reckons the limiting factor is the head unit, not the interface, so not much you can do about it. He has also said that the new mapping disc(CNDV-60 DVD) which is a way off yet will not improve matters. In short, the current setup is as good as it gets if you want to stick to Pioneer.
Tman - how did this go? I looked at this myself but was told that the Tuscan wouldn't support the weight of the device which is why TVR don't offer it as an option (although they do on the Sagaris).
Aparently it bounced around quite a bit - how have you found it?
I'd put off buying because of my concerns - do you have photos of it in the Tuscan unit?

I'm getting the install done this week by the chaps in Unicar who did the initial install. They say it shouldn't be a problem so I'm hoping they'll squeeze everything in. I'm actually thinking about putting in an Alpine unit - the IVA-D310 - instead because it's got a much better ipod interface and equally good sat nav (but it costs £500 more). Once it's in I'll get some pictures up of the install.

I had an X1 in my Cerbera - fitted no problem. The unit has a mode which stops it retracting the base of the screen too far once it has tipped it up which allows it to be vertical against the "bulge" of the dash. The hide-away unit fitted perfectly behind the "helmet hole" in the back.
