The wife got a wierd phone call yesterday.

Him: I'm trying to get some details on you.

Her: Why?

Him: I'm a Federal Investigator and I need some data on your background.

Her: Why?

Him: I'm not allowed to say.

Her: Look, if can convince me that you have a genuine reason* to find something out about me then fine but so far you've not exactly done that. Even then I'd need more proof than a phone call. Who are you and who do you work for?

Him: I'm sorry I'm not allowed to reveal my identity but I am trying to do an investigation and I need some information from you.

Her: Sorry I can't help, goodbye.

*Oddly police have turned up before on my doorstep asking for persons who we've never heard of. It is remotely possible that someone who once claimed to live at our house is still doing so on the far side of the pond.

Apparently the man had an American accent.

The start of yet another African style sting, only by phone instead of e-mail? I get dozens of these things.

Has anyone else had this happen? It really wasn't much of a joke if that's what it was supposed to be.

Curious.

I think I'd ask, "shall we meet or go into more detailed correspondence, do you have my address"?

"No"

"So feck off then"

Terrible terrible attempt at a scam. With five minutes forethought anyone could make it sound a bit more plausible than claiming to be a "federal investigator". Since when are we in the states?

I love the similar scene in Layer Cake...
