I saw an excellent documentary on BBC3 last night on this subject.

Apparently, in the UK up until about the 1960's 50% of men were circumcised. These days it's about 2%.

In the US 80% of male babies are "cut"

The US argument is that to remain uncut is dirty, causes infections and cancer to a partners cervics. The British Medical Assosciation dismissed these arguments (as did other American researchers) as complete unfounded rubbish.

I guess if one doesn't wash frequently (once a year or less) there is risk of infections but it's highly unlikely that anyone who didn't wash themselves would even have a partner

One researcher in the US agreed it should be retained in the uncut state as it seals in the juices and aids lubrication during nookie. A cut manhood is also far less sensitive and is far less easily stimulated, the two researchers also concluded (one male one female) that the skin rolling back and forth is stimulating for females.

The actual process of circumcision is pretty barbaric. They apply a clamp to cut off blood supply to the end and then trim it off with a scapel blade and it can actually go wrong in some cases and result in amputation of the penis, or a very bad infection!

Personally, I would say it is there for a very good reason and that is to protect the head and that without it you are more prone to infections and to damaging the very delicate flesh beneath.

What's the PH consensus?

Its kinda like the whole private/state school debate, if you were schooled in one or the other, you have no idea what the other is like..

As for women, some prefer cut, some perfer uncut.. swings and roundabouts

As a circumcised male (medical not religious or fashion) I must say that the absence of a foreskin is no problem, but equally unless there's a good reason for circumcisiom I'd say leave well enough alone.

Also watched this documentary. I can't help feeling that if nature put it there it must serve some purpose.

The documentary interviewed women and most Americans thought cut was best (but then that's all that had known anyway) and the rest of the world said it didn't really make any difference.

Like tha appendix, or nipples on men? Doesn't really stand up that argument, just means that the existance of the prepuce has not had any deleterious effect on breeding success.

Yes, but nature also brought Ken Livingstone into the world...
....and if that isn't a case for a prick deserving decapitation, I don't know what is.

Absolutely - why would you elect to have an operation when it is un-necessary? If you need it (and I remember a childhood friend of mine needing it due to "medical reasons" - not religious) then fine, but otherwise why risk the dangers....

Seems pretty pointless to me.

Shall we start a "who's been cut" thread?
