Sure this has been covered before but can't find anything in old stuff.
Heard a Noble near Cambs the other day (azure 3r) and it was gurgling and coughing on lift off and sounded far noiser and more throghty than mine. I can only assume the cat had been removed.
I had this done on my elise and it sounded far better and gave more power too.
Is it a possible or are there downsides to doing it.
There is a "supercar" tuner/servicer in Cambridge called Labtech or something who I am sure would be able to do it for me and swop it back for mot's etc so I just need to know if it will damage anything or if I need any special bits.
MattFP?
Thanks

Is wrecking the environment 100+ times worse really worth a "throaty" sound? ![]()
Power increase will be minimal as there isn't much in the ECU that could auto adjust to get you more power.

And Noble owners worry about the envoirenment? 6mpg on the track? New tyres every 10,000 miles?
I think I need another herbal infusion!
Happy new year

PS Justin, where is the tape, I thought you mentioned posting it but it ain't turned up. I'm hoping its still on your desk and not that Royal Mail have lost it.
On authority from Yellowshed, who mapped the cars, removing the CAT will give 1 or 2 BHP more than with them. They aren't restrictive at all it would appear.
From what I can gather, replacing the entire exhaust from turbo back, with larger diameter, will not give additional power, but will make things more responsive. Ultimately power is governed by fuel and air. Fuel by ECU, and air from boost pressure. If the max boost pressure stays the same (governed by ECU) max power will not increase (unless you can flow more air with the same boost level, i.e. flow the heads etc). However, turbo's WILL spin up quicker, if the waste pipe (exhaust) is less restrictive. Full turbo back system is not cheap.
You would need to remove the CATS if you wanted to run EGR, or anti-lag, as the heat destroys them, but I don't know of anyone has done this on a Noble.
Feel free to ridicule me if I've got it all wrong.

surely the harm to the enviroment is governed by the amount of miles you do, i'm all for noise and flames...............and i drive a hybred in the week.
Adrian
However, you would throw out the same CO2 regardless of cats or not, it just seems frivolous to remove the cats for a 1-2bhp change when, assuming you keep the miles the same, you are doing so much more hard in noxious substances.
People can of course shot at me "hypocrite" given I own a M400 and a 4.4 X5 (not exactly the best for CO2 emmissions), but I do subscribe to carbon replacement schemes which plant a significant number of trees each year from donations to me to make my consious a little bit better....
Some people will say "but my one decatted car will make sod all difference compared to all the other cars", and that is true, but when removing it gives such little gains, it seems a bit against the grain to me to do it.
Maybe I'm just weird

So the fact that I am driving to the alps next week with 6 in my car and not flying should make it more than ok to remove my cat.
I must admit to beimg more interested in that lovely throaty gurgle you get on lift off rather than the extra few bhp that I would never even notice.
Just asking the question as it seems that with many other marques, cat removal is standard practice if you want to get the best out of your car.
Rob, I do love my car and have not really modded it at all. I like cars to be "as standard" generally. I have the MF IC whcih was "low cost" (!) and have painted my door handles body colour. Oh, and fitted a pump up lumbar. Oh and got the afterburners. Oh and white side repeaters. Oh and new speakers and remote control for stereo.
But other than that, its totally standard and very loved!
Infact I still can't believe that I have had it for 10 months now and changing it has still never entered my mind! Normally by now I am more in love with the idea of the next car on my list. But there is'nt one.
I am going to try to find a link to the de-cat noise I talk of for y'all.

Here we are. Its not long but as the car exits stage left half way through you can hear some lovely spluttering.
Thats all I was after!
Sorry to have upset the Eco-heads out there! Not my intention. After all, I quit smoking on NYE so thats going to reduce the co2 emmissions from Cambridge too!

The popping/banging and flames are more to do with the mapping and the integrity of the exhaust system, you could mess around with the map and get six foot flames if you want, also a small hole just after the headers will do the same job but either will shorten the life of the cats. My M400 has a three inch complete system with two 100 cell race cats, and it sound great.

This clip is well worth seeing too!!
Adrian, can you shed a bit more light on those 2 methods please. I am interested if there is a simple and un-damaging way to make the noises better. (not too fussed if it wears the cat out a bit faster as long as nothing gets damaged thats more serious)
Thanks.

Any trackday noise problems?
Greg, I have a "after market" exhaust with high flow cats. It now bangs and pops on the overrun, sounds great, shame i killed my chocloate 5 speed box on xmas day, still hopefully the six speed and M400 linkage will be fitted in time for the brands day, if it is quite happy to give you a demo, also it does give more power (rolling road confirmed).

And a very impressive rolling road report it was too Alex! Would be great to have a listen to yours then.
I think as we are meeting on the Saturday, we should get down there at lunch time and have a bit of a drive to a nice country pub or something. ???
What (in lay terms) would be done to the map to make it soundf better? How and what effects would this have on anything else?

Any clues to price?
